The Kennel Club is mostly made up of recognized breed clubs where people who breed or like the same breeds meet, driven by their love of the breed. Many clubs offer special activities or seminars for breeders, or organize social gatherings that breed enthusiasts and their dogs enjoy equally. The Kennel Club has classified the various breeds into seven groups by type. The groups are as follows:
Gundog Group (Group of Hunting Dogs): Within the breed clubs, this group includes dogs that were originally trained to search for live game and/or shot and wounded game. This group can be further divided into four categories, which are Retrievers, Spaniels, dogs searching for wounded game, and Pointers and Setters – although many breeds are capable of performing the same work within these subgroups. Thanks to their temperament, these dogs can live as ideal and versatile companions in the family.

Hound Group (Group of Hunting Dogs): Within the breed clubs, these breeds were also originally used for hunting, based on their excellent sense of smell and/or their remarkable speed. Hunting dogs that work based on scent include the Beagle and Bloodhound, while those hunting based on remarkable speed include Greyhounds and Whippets. Many of them enjoy and appreciate significant physical exercise; in addition, they can be dignified, reserved, and reliable companions for people.

Pastoral Group (Group of Shepherd Dogs): Within the breed clubs, this group consists of herding dogs whose work is related to herding cattle, sheep, reindeer, and other cloven-hoofed animals. These types of dogs usually have a weather-resistant double coat, which serves to protect dogs working in extreme weather conditions from the elements. Some of the breeds in this group include the Collie family, the Old English Sheepdog, and the Samoyeds, who have worked in reindeer herding for centuries.

Terrier Group (Terrier group): Within the breed clubs, these are dogs that were originally bred and are still used today to combat pests. The word "Terrier" derives from the Latin word "Terra," which means "Earth." These bold dogs have been selectively bred so that only the very brave and tough individuals continue to work against foxes, badgers, rats, and otters (just to mention a few) both above and below ground. Terrier-type dogs have been known since ancient times; painters and writers have long depicted these dogs in their paintings and stories in the Middle Ages, recounting their work.

Toy Group (Group of Small-sized Dogs, Lapdogs): Within the breed clubs, Toy breeds are small-sized dogs or lapdogs. Some Toy breeds were bred for these purposes, while a few were placed in this group primarily because of their small size. These breeds should have a friendly personality and attentive affection towards their owners. They do not require much physical exercise, and some of them are quite picky eaters.

Utility Group (Mixed group): Within the breed clubs this group consists of various breeds that were originally bred not for sporting purposes, such as the Bulldog, Dalmatian, Akita, and Poodle. The group's name, "Utility," essentially means usable for a purpose, and because of this trait, the group is made up of extremely mixed and diverse breeds. Most breeds in the group have been selectively bred for a special function (which is neither sport nor work). Some breeds in the group are among the oldest documented breeds in the world.

Working Group: Within the breed clubs the dogs belonging to the group have been selectively bred to become good search and rescue dogs. The working group undoubtedly consists of some very heroic dog breeds that assist humans in many areas of life, including the Boxer, Great Dane, and Saint Bernard. This group is made up of true specialists who excel in their respective fields.
