The European Dog Show, translated into Hungarian as Európa Kutyakiállítás, is every year one of the largest and most prestigious shows, which now has a 34-year tradition. Applications must be submitted years in advance to organize the show, and the FCI Board decides by vote which country or nation can organize the European show in a given year.

History of the Euro Dog Show

The first European Dog Show was held in 1982 in Brussels, and the second the following year in Zurich. Since 1982, the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale), the most prestigious worldwide canine organization, annually awards the hosting rights through a tender process to a country. After the first two, the further European Shows were held in the following cities: Verona, Lyon, Luxembourg, Tulln, Maastricht, Verona, Helsinki, Copenhagen, Genoa, Tulln, Poznan, Tel-Aviv, Paris, Bratislava, Barcelona, Tulln, Helsinki, Zagreb, Budapest, Dublin, Celje, Leeuwarden, Bucharest, and this year the spectacular dog show arrived in Geneva.

Among the European shows held so far, the third highest number of entries was recorded at the Paris show with eleven thousand dogs entered.

The 2008 Budapest European Show broke this record with a fifteen thousand entry count. Organized and arranged by the Hungarian National Association of Dog Breeders, the Budapest Euro Dog Show ranks second in terms of entries. Dog enthusiasts came to the European Show from 61 countries on five continents. Hungary had the highest number of entries, followed by Russia in second place, and Italy in third place for the most dogs entered for the event. The breeds registered with the highest number of entries were:

  1. American Staffordshire Terrier 327
  2. Labrador Retriever 265
  3. Cane Corso 232
  4. Bulldog 226
  5. Siberian Husky 221

The top position belongs to the Centenary European Dog Show held in Leeuwarden with sixteen thousand entries. Organized and hosted by the “Raad van Beheer” Dutch Kennel Club, in the 100th anniversary year of the founding of the FCI. The Netherlands (the “Raad van Beheer” Dutch Kennel Club) is one of the founding member countries of the FCI, one of the five founding countries. The Kennel Club was established in 1902. Its official name is “Raad van Beheer” op Kynologisch Gebied a Nederland, the main cynological organization in the Netherlands. Its headquarters are in Amsterdam. Approximately 2,100,000 dogs live in the country, of which 700,000 have FCI pedigrees (35%) and some 330 breeds are recognized in the country.
