The Westminster Kennel Club continues to firmly believe and support that the best source for families to purchase a puppy or adult dog is a responsible breeder, who breeds with the aim of improving the health and physical traits of the breed. It must be ensured that breeders continuously study their pedigrees and breeding stock, carry out the necessary health screening tests for the breed’s hereditary diseases, socialize their puppies and follow them throughout their further lives. Responsible breeders are proud of their dogs and participate in breed organizations’ activities by putting the knowledge gained over the years at the service of the breed.
As in many past years, the Westminster Kennel Club again draws people's attention to this during the television broadcast with the following statement:
“If you plan to add a dog to your life and can find the best from the best, we call your attention: what you saw today or yesterday at the pet shop is not a dog, it is a product originating from a puppy mill. If you want a dog, go to people who care about them – specifically dedicated breeders who have their fate at heart – throughout their entire lives.”
Find the dog that fits your lifestyle.
Unconditional tail-wagging love – You too can experience this feeling. Here are some things that the Westminster Kennel Club recommends to find the special four-legged companion for yourself and your family.
First, consider your time, your home duties and in light of this, find a dog that fits your lifestyle. Being a dog owner is a very special experience. The reality is that you will have another family member for 10-15 years, as that is the lifespan of a healthy dog. It is important to responsibly consider this process.
Do not buy a dog on a sudden impulse. Do not buy a dog just because it is fashionable. Trends come and go, but the dog will be with you for many years. Stars like “101 Dalmatians” or “Beethoven” are wonderful dogs, but not for everyone, and may not be suitable for you or your family either.
Imagine the dog as an adult. Every puppy is a cute furry ball, but you need to know what to do to ensure it grows up healthy. You will know how to provide the basic requirements necessary for the puppy’s growth regarding personality, grooming, and conditioning.
Study the history of the breed. There are breeds specifically bred to perform a particular function. If you know the breed’s function and history, you will be best prepared for a successful relationship.
Be committed! Owning a dog means responsibility! Make sure you always spend quality time with your dog!
Here are some additional suggestions:
- Look for books, magazines, websites, videos with this kind of content.
- Contact local Dog Breeder Organizations or veterinarians.
- Visit dog shows where you can meet and talk with breed-loving owners and breeders.
Be a responsible dog owner!
Based on experience, we can say there are no bad dogs, only bad owners.
Love your dog and include him in your life!
You must know the dog-related laws where you live. For example, the requirement for permanent identification by tattoo or microchip. In practice, the dog owner respects their neighbors regarding dog ownership as well. Always pick up your dog’s waste everywhere. Check why your dog is barking and you must know how to handle behavioral problems.
Take your dog to basic training and this will help them become a responsible member of the family. A trained dog is a happy dog.
The Westminster Kennel Club Charity Activities
The Westminster Kennel Club has a unique, significant, and extensive impact on the dog world and the public opinion of dog owners.
For more than 137 years – since its founding in 1877 – the Westminster Kennel Club has reached local, national, and international communities with its messages. Westminster continuously informs its audience with significant and credible messages.
It considers its mission to assist dog owners in sharing life tasks so they learn about unconditional love, loyalty, and living in the moment from their dogs. For years, Westminster has been known worldwide as the largest dog show. This is thanks to the popular USA Network>> live TV broadcast, which over the past 20 years has turned Westminster into a celebration of dogs in our lives. Highlighting that these are real dogs and real people in a great family sport, reminding viewers and fans that the true Best In Show dog is the one sitting at home beside us on the couch.
Charity: All the proceeds from the first show held in 1877 were donated by Westminster to the ASPCA>> organization to use these funds to create a home for stray and disabled animals. This donation has continued every year since. In addition, Westminster also supports the Red Cross, the National Anti-War Fund, the Search and Rescue Dogs Organization, the Greyhound Rescue Organization, the Foundation responsible for Dogs' Health, animal health centers, and over the years has allocated more than 1 million dollars in scholarships for veterinary students attending Cornell, Pennsylvania, Tufts, Michigan, and California.
More charity: The Westminster team, in collaboration with the Purina sponsor, participates in charity work, helping dogs in distress with the support of Breed Rescue Organizations across the country. Over the years, Westminster has helped rescue dogs in trouble with donations totaling 1 million dollars.
The Westminster Kennel Club and its famous annual all-breed show have attracted the attention of millions over the years, including those who attended the show, millions of television viewers (since the first broadcast in 1948), hundreds of thousands of exhibitors, and in recent years, millions of viewers through the internet and social media. More than 600 media representatives from over 20 countries personally cover the event annually, placing numerous stories in the media to help promote the Kennel Club and its famous show nationwide, and we can even say worldwide.
