The World Dog Show, or World Dog Exhibition, is a large international dog show lasting 3-4 days, the right to organize which is awarded every year by the International Cynological Federation, the FCI, and the country with the most votes among the applicants wins it.
The World Exhibition showcases the world's most beautiful dogs over 3-4 days. At this prestigious exhibition, every breeder wishes to have their dog or dogs evaluated at least once (and many times after the first).
In addition to the international dog show itself, the World Dog Show includes numerous other dog-related events, such as the junior handlers competition, agility competitions and demonstrations, working and herding dog demonstrations, dog dancing shows, entertaining dog presentations, and many other interesting programs. The annual World and European Exhibitions also place great emphasis on animal protection, animal health, and the issue of responsible pet ownership.
World Dog Show History
The first World Dog Show was held in 1971 in Budapest, making Hungary the first country in history to organize this high-level exhibition. The following year, the World Exhibition moved to another continent, with Brazil as the designated location. In the subsequent years, including this year, the world event has visited many cities in many countries. Several countries and even the same city within those countries have hosted the World Dog Show twice, or even three times. These countries and cities include Italy/Milan, Finland/Helsinki, Hungary/Budapest, Austria/Tulln, Denmark/Herning, Czech Republic/Brno, France/Paris, Germany/Dortmund, Netherlands/Amsterdam, Mexico City/Mexico.
The recent World Dog Shows stand out highly among the series of World Dog Exhibitions, both in terms of organization, entries, attendance, and diverse dog-related programs.
The FCI Centennial World Dog Show was held between July 7 and 10, 2011, organized and hosted by the French Kennel Club, in the 130th year since the founding of the Kennel Club and the 100th anniversary of the FCI. France (the French Kennel Club) is a founding member of the FCI, one of the five founding countries. Notable dates in the Kennel Club's life are 1974, when they first hosted a World Exhibition, and 2011, when they hosted it again after nearly 37 years. The venue for the World Exhibition was the Paris-Nord Villepinte Exhibition Park in central Paris, which has been and surely will remain a location for many French and international events. According to statistics, a total of 21,678 dogs were registered for the World Exhibition, a very high number of entries, thanks to the Centennial year and the 130th anniversary of the French Kennel Club.
The following year, the honour of hosting the World Dog Exhibition went to the Austrian Kennel Club. The World Dog Show was held in Salzburg, Austria, from May 18 to 20, 2012. Salzburg, the geographical and cultural center of Europe, is also known for its world-famous Festival. More than 18,000 dogs were registered for the World Exhibition. Over the three-day event, individuals of 350 dog breeds competed from 55 countries around the world, with the participation of 139 conformation judges. The exhibition was held in a huge event center covering 40 m², with both outdoor and indoor areas. Judging took place simultaneously in over 100 rings, and 500 people assisted to ensure the smooth running of the exhibition. The BIS program was held in the covered central hall of the event center, which could accommodate 3,500 spectators.
In 2013, the World Dog Show returned to Hungary, from May 16 to 19, where the world’s most beautiful dogs were again seen in Budapest. In the days before the World Exhibition, on May 13 and 14, the International Cynological Federation, the FCI, held its congress, at which the new FCI President, Mr. Rafael De Santiago, was elected. On May 15, the five-day series of events began, which included several breed shows, the CACIB GRAND PRIX exhibition, and the World Exhibition itself. On May 15, on the zero day, the CACIB GRAND PRIX international exhibition was held, which, in terms of entry numbers, was the largest one-day exhibition ever organized by the MEOE.
18,000 dog registrations were recorded for the World Show organized by the Hungarian National Association of Dog Breeders, of which 3,374 dogs of various breeds represented Hungary. The best judges from 5 continents arrived in Budapest to judge the most beautiful dogs in the world. Alongside the World Show, special events were also held, such as the largest terrier show, Interra, the European exhibition of sighthounds, Eurosighthound, the World Cup of Hungarian Dog Breeds, and the Obedience World Championship, a great competition for sport dogs, which took place in Gödöllő.
During the four-day exhibition divided by breed groups, more than 350 internationally recognized dog breeds were presented, many of which were either unknown or less known in our country.
The president of the Hungarian National Association of Dog Breeders, András Korózs said that the most important message of the four-day world competition was that a small country and a small kennel club can skillfully organize a World Show. This is important to highlight because this is always a recurring topic when awarding the hosting rights of World and Europe shows at FCI general assemblies.
