In the middle of the hottest month of summer, on July 18 and 19, 2015, we can participate in the 2 x CACIB international dog shows organized and hosted by the Eastern Hungarian Dog Breeders Association in Debrecen. Following the traditions of previous years, the venue this year is again the area of the University of Debrecen Agricultural Science Center.

The Association was established in the 1960s, then under the name MEOE Debrecen Organization. Specifically, in 1967 the hunting, herding, protection, and working departments were formed, and within the framework of the Association, training for these as well as for guide dogs also began. In 1990, the Association became legally independent, and nowadays it is recognized as the largest Association by membership. Besides organizing the two major shows (2 x CACIB and the night CACIB), the Association also holds two to three working exams and breed tests annually, and continuous training runs in the protection, hunting, and agility departments.

The summer CACIB international dog shows organized by the Eastern Hungarian Dog Breeders Association have a long tradition. Since the 2000s, the Association has held this large-scale two-day dog show almost every year, enchanting exhibitors with its pleasant atmosphere (including the night CACIB dog show, which is even more magical in the mysterious lighting).

As a teaser, our visitors can watch a charming video recording made by Ebugatta TV at one of the Debrecen international dog shows of recent years:

The venue of the 2 x CACIB international dog show is Debrecen, which is Hungary’s second largest and most populous city, and also the cultural, economic, tourist, and transport center of Eastern Hungary. Nowadays it is regarded as one of the most dynamically developing cities in our country.

The city of Debrecen is often referred to as Calvinist Rome or a citizen city, which gained market town status in the 1300s, then royal town status in the 1600s, and has been the country’s capital twice. Its history has been intertwined with the Reformation for centuries, as evidenced by many historical monuments, including Kossuth Square, the Memorial Park, and the Great Forest Sculpture Park.

Among its sights stands out the symbol of the city, the 19th-century classical style Great Reformed Church, which is the largest reformed church in the country and houses the armchair of Lajos Kossuth as a relic. The building is located in the heart of the city, at Kossuth Square; behind it is the Reformed College, operating since the 1500s, whose prestige was established by its famous teachers and students. The College’s large library, with a collection of half a million volumes—including rare books—is registered as the largest collection of the Reformed Church in Hungary.
Next to the College is the Déri Museum building, built in neo-baroque style. In its most famous section, the Munkácsy Hall, two works of Mihály Munkácsy’s world-famous Christ trilogy can be seen.

Another landmark of the city center is the historic Aranybika Hotel, which is the oldest still operating hotel in the country, the Main Square, where the city’s coat of arms made of glass mosaic is embedded in decorative paving in the middle, and the Town Hall, a classical style building that is among the most beautiful.

The city’s rich cultural offerings include the spectacular and wonderful Flower Carnival on August 20th, Jazz Days, the Poetry Festival, and the Summer University events.

The city’s most popular tourist event is the unique Flower Carnival in Europe. For this spectacle related to the crowning of the state founder Saint Stephen and the celebration of the new bread, several hundred thousand people come to the city. The main event of the week-long series, the Flower Carnival, becomes more spectacular every year, with participants seeing wonderfully beautiful flower compositions whose magnificent scent is not negligible either. In addition, high-quality, entertaining programs, concerts, dance performances, children’s programs, and as the crowning event of the day, fireworks await families and guests attending the Flower Carnival.

The Zoo can really provide relaxation for families, which has been welcoming visitors since 1958. Over the nearly 60 years, the area of the Zoo has continuously grown, and today it can be said that a park meeting EU standards has been created, where visiting families and guests can see about 1,500 specimens of 165 species from 5 continents.

The conditions for the species living here provide significantly greater well-being and better welfare than before. Together with its 341 plant species, the area has been under nature protection since 1994.

Among Debrecen’s natural sights, the Great Forest stands out, which from 1939 onwards became Hungary’s first nature reserve, expanded with a zoo, amusement park, and botanical garden, whose original plant life is identical to that of the Great Forest. In the arboretum, among about 8,000 plant species, plenty of tropical rarities can be seen, furthermore, the Europe-renowned cactus collection representing 2,000 species and 10,000 plants is also located here.

The actual venue of the dog shows, the area of the Agricultural Science Center of the University of Debrecen, is also located in Nagyerdő, where every visitor, guest, and exhibitor with their dogs is warmly welcomed and awaited in mid-summer by the East Hungarian Dog Breeders Association with two colorful and atmospheric dog shows.
