Introducing the City of the Dog Show, Jászberény
The city of the CAC dog show is Jászberény, located in the heart of the Great Plain along both banks of the Zagyva River. Jászberény, known as the "Capital of the Jászság," is the second most populous city in the county.
According to archaeological findings, the area was inhabited already in prehistoric times; Celts and later Avars settled in this territory. The settlement was established during the rule of the Árpád dynasty, but was unfortunately completely destroyed during the Tatar invasion.
The Jász people populated this region in the 13th century. Since then, Jászberény has been the intellectual, economic, and religious center of the Jászság region. During the Turkish era, the city belonged to the Sultan’s private treasury, and a palisade castle was built for its protection, which was unfortunately destroyed by fire and was never rebuilt. The city also took part in the 1848-49 War of Independence; volunteers recruited from Jászság formed the Lehel Hussar Regiment in Jászberény. After the 1950s, the city began to develop more and more, with the establishment of the first industrial plants offering more employment opportunities for the population.
Among the sights of Jászberény, the first to mention is the Jász Museum, which has been operating since 1931 and showcases written and material memories of the past of the Jász people through its permanent exhibitions. The most valuable piece of the collection displayed in the historic building is the richly carved ivory horn, Lehel’s horn, which, according to legend, was owned by Lehel, a Hungarian hero who raided Germany at the end of the 10th century. The Hamza Museum and the Jász Gallery represent the painterly work of Hamza D. Ákos, painter and film director, and the museum also preserves the 600-book library of Hamza D. Ákos.
Further historical sights in the city include the Gothic-origin and Baroque-style Church of the Virgin Mary of the Hungarians, the Franciscan Church, built in the 15th century, and the Ascension of Jesus Roman Catholic Church.
Jászberény has a lively cultural life thanks to its annual recurring events, such as the International Dance House and Music Camp, the Csángó Festival, the National Honey Fair, and the Jászberényi Summer. The internationally renowned Jászság Folk Dance Ensemble, the Lehel Ballroom Dance Club, the Palotásy János Mixed Choir, and the Székely Mihály Choir also operate in the city.
For families, a real recreation is provided by the Animal and Plant Garden, which has been operating since 1979 and is one of the smallest zoos in Hungary with its 4.5-hectare area. The zoo showed almost a constant picture for nearly two decades, but large changes began in the mid-1990s when the cramped closed cages were replaced with spacious enclosures, and further nature-close innovations were introduced.
The goal of the zoo is to keep and display the animals under the best possible conditions, so the enclosures are spacious and enriched with environmental elements, imitating natural habitats. Like other domestic zoos, their main tasks are education and nature conservation awareness.
The zoo welcomes guests daily with zoo-pedagogical performance feedings. During the programs started in 2001, animals receive their daily food, often having to work for it, while visitors hear a lot of information about the animals.
In 2003, the zoo began expanding towards the arboretum, literally bringing visitors into the forest, where within the 2-hectare arboretum there are three study trails, along which visitors can learn many important things about bird and forest protection. The Bird Protection Study Trail presents more than 90 animal species with colorful pictures on 41 stations and 50 information boards, as well as 66 bird protection tools and methods. The purpose of establishing the study trail was to involve the arboretum next to the Jászberény zoo in visitors’ attention and thereby in environmental education.
Come and visit, the organizers warmly welcome you!
