We can participate in this year's last CAC National Dog Show organized and arranged by the Southern Great Plain Association of Dog Breeders and Hobby Dog Owners on October 20, 2019. The venue for the dog show is traditionally Szeged also this year.

At this year's last CAC National Dog Show, we can participate under the organization and management of the Southern Great Plain Association of Dog Breeders and Hobby Dog Owners on October 20, 2019. The venue of the dog show, traditionally this year as well, is the Dog Training Ground of the Association in the village of Algyő, located 12 kilometers from Szeged.

The Organizing Association, the Southern Great Plain Association of Dog Breeders and Hobby Dog Owners

The former Szeged organization of MEOE was formed around the 1970s. In the decades following its establishment, the association tried to bring together the dog life of the area, coordinated the work of breeders and exhibitors, and helped dogs and owners eager to learn with dog training sessions. The renewal came for the organization in 2012, when it was transformed into an independent association, and its name was changed to Southern Great Plain Association of Dog Breeders and Hobby Dog Owners. The Association's goal continues to be the promotion of professional breeding of purebred dogs and the widespread introduction and promotion of cultured dog keeping. Their plans include organizing and holding dog shows, kynological events, competitions, popularizing dog sports, facilitating dog training, organizing related events, obedience, protection, agility, coursing, and hunting dog training.

The organization has great traditions in the field of dog shows, as it has successfully organized and conducted a CAC dog show almost every other year since the 2000s. Most recently, it hosted a national dog show in 2017 and can organize one again this year. We wish them good organizational work, many beautiful exhibited dogs, plenty of kind visitors, and a successfully conducted CAC dog show!

Introducing the dog show city, Szeged

“The most beautiful mirage of the Hungarian Great Plain / You are, my native city, Szeged” – thus writes Juhász Gyula about his beloved city in his poem entitled “Sonnet to Szeged”. The Hungarian Plain, the landscape around Szeged, and the Tisza River always appear as main motifs in the poet’s landscape poems. “I walk quietly along the Tisza shore / And listen to what the waves cry / I stop under a cloudy spring sky / And while the water flows and time runs / I feel that above the old Tisza / The star of eternal life trembles” – this small excerpt is quoted from Juhász Gyula’s poem “Szeged”. This poem adorns the sculpture of Juhász Gyula located in Roosevelt Square Park on the Tisza riverside in Szeged, erected in his memory in the 1950s.

The city of the CAC dog show is Szeged, which is Hungary’s third largest and most populous city and the center of the South Great Plain region. The city’s history is closely linked to the Tisza River. One of the most defining events in the formation of the current cityscape was the flood of 1879. On the night of March 12th, the Tisza broke through the dam at Petre and flooded the city, which was practically completely destroyed. Of the 5,723 houses, only 265 remained intact. Most of the city’s 70,000 residents were relocated to other settlements, with only about 10,000 Szeged residents remaining in the city. When Franz Joseph visited, he promised that Szeged would be more beautiful than before. The emperor kept his promise, and in the following years, a new, modern city was built on the ruins. As the water slowly receded, the city was surrounded by embankments. This was when the city's ring road structure was formed. Several major European cities also helped in the city’s reconstruction, which is why sections of the grand boulevard were named after these cities. During the reconstruction, much of the Szeged Fortress was demolished. Old buildings were replaced by nicer, more modern structures. The city was rebuilt and continuously developed, resulting in Szeged becoming the county seat of Csongrád in 1962. During the socialist years, its role in light and food industries was strengthened. In the 1990s, many factories established during socialism gradually closed down. Today, Szeged is the most important city in the region, a university city, and also popular with tourists.

Szeged is a city with a rich history, a charming and dynamically developing settlement on the banks of the Tisza. The city has acquired many nicknames over the centuries, so it is called the Famous City, the City of Sunshine, and the Festival City. The city’s dynamic commerce and its widely known products – such as Szeged salami or paprika – made it the Famous City, the almost Mediterranean climate and southern location earned it the title City of Sunshine, and the year-round cultural events spanning almost every artistic field – including the Szeged Open-Air Festival – made it the Festival City. Juhász Gyula lived in Szeged, Radnóthy Miklós and Petőfi Sándor studied here, and Mikszáth Kálmán drew inspiration here. Szeged was an outstanding literary center in the past and still plays an important role in the Hungarian literary scene today.

The nickname City of Sunshine comes from a typical sun motif decoration on houses, but the sights go far beyond these beautifully decorated residential buildings. There are many landmarks in Szeged, such as the Szeged Cathedral, the REÖK Palace, the New Synagogue, the Black House, the Count’s Palace, the Water Tower, the City Hall, the Musical Clock, the Szeged National Theatre, the Serbian Church, the Reformed Church, the Votive Church, the Móra Ferenc Museum, the Pick Salami and Szeged Paprika Museum, the Anna Bath, the Roman Catholic Church, the Lower Town Church, all of which you can explore in detail in this film.

The city offers numerous programs for visiting tourists and locals alike. Museums, galleries, cinemas, discos, and theaters in the city all provide excellent entertainment opportunities. A prominent cultural event is the summer-long Szeged Open-Air Festival, held in the open space in front of the Votive Church, where world-famous opera singers and actors often perform, attracting several thousand spectators to Dóm Square in the evenings. The city also hosts several fairs and festivals. Alongside the wine and beer festival, the fish soup cooking competition and the Szeged Industrial Exhibition held at Roosevelt Square complement the program offerings. Szeged has a long tradition in kayak and canoe sports. Prestigious sporting events held on the high-standard rowing course in Szeged regularly attract sports enthusiasts to the city. The Kayak-Canoe World Championships were held here in 1998, 2006, and 2011. Additionally, the thermal baths, swimming pools, and Tisza river natural beaches make the city an ideal tourist destination.

One of the city's most beautiful and prestigious events is the Szőreg Rose Festival. Local residents warmly welcome back every year all those who, like them, are lovers of roses.

During the three days, visitors have the opportunity to gain insight into the daily life of rose growers and learn about the rose fields around Szőreg and the daily work carried out in the fields.

Besides current production methods and tools, Hungary's first Rose Museum also presents century-old tangible and written memories. The main attraction of the Szőreg Rose Festival is the carnival parade held on Saturday afternoon, where a festive procession decorated with hundreds of thousands of roses marches through the streets of Szőreg. Following the parade, concerts, stage programs, and fireworks that last until dawn entertain the guests of the Szőreg Rose Festival.

Among the city's specialties, we count Szeged Paprika, Szeged Fisherman's Soup, and Pick salami. Szeged Paprika is now a Hungarikum. The first record mentioning paprika in Szeged dates back to 1748. According to the common people, it was the priests, who at that time were also teachers and doctors, who wanted to spread and naturalize the plant found in their gardens. To prove its usefulness and good taste, they started eating it. Since the paprika was quite hot, the priests began to shed tears. This is how the word paprika developed from “paprikató” (tear-inducing). At the beginning of the 19th century, Napoleon's conquests and the trade blockade he ordered caused a spice shortage, boosting paprika cultivation, allowing spice paprika to be produced in commercial quantities. The demand for Szeged spice paprika powder increased, and its fame, as well as the product itself, reached ever more distant countries.

Szeged Fisherman's Soup is the most famous along the Tisza River. Its characteristic is that it is made from several types of fish. After cooking, smaller fish, heads, and tails are "passed through," that is, pressed through a sieve. This thickens the broth, but removes all debris. Then the fish meat is cooked in the basic broth. Szeged is situated on the bank of the Tisza River. The outstanding qualities of Pick salami, the harmonious aroma, and the unique taste are given by the local characteristics. The characteristic of the raw material, the traditional production technology of salami, the climatic conditions related to the proximity of the Tisza River, the presence of mold flora, and the preserved craftsmanship skills passed from salami master to salami master all contributed to the worldwide success of Szeged winter salami, which is now considered a traditional product.

Szeged is also rich in natural attractions. First and foremost, we must mention the Szeged Zoo, which is Hungary’s youngest and largest (450,000 square meters) zoological park. It specializes primarily in keeping endangered species, with a particularly outstanding section exhibiting South American animals.

The animal collection of the Szeged Zoo is not the largest in Hungary. If we only look at the numbers, it is considered a medium-sized zoo. However, if we consider the rarity of species and their conservation value, the claim that Szeged is one of the most special zoos in our country is justified. A significant portion of the animal species here is a rarity even in a European context. Among domestic zoos, Szeged has the highest proportion of animals kept as part of international species conservation programs. Of course, popular zoo animals are not missing either; lions, meerkats, and camels can be found here, and we plan to keep giraffes and penguins in the near future.

It is less known that zoos also function as regional nature conservation rescue centers. They receive a large number of injured wild animals, orphaned cubs, chicks, or animals transported and kept without permission, then confiscated by the authorities. The Szeged Zoo stands out among domestic zoos from this perspective as well, especially due to its proximity to the border, playing a significant role in receiving such animals.

The Botanical Garden of the University of Szeged is a mecca for plant and nature lovers. The garden area contains 5,120 plant species, including about 1,800 tropical plant species, 440 cacti, and 470 other succulent plants. Its special features include the Chinese giant sequoia and the Indian lotus.

The greenhouse is home to tropical, subtropical, Mediterranean, and desert plants, housing nearly 1,200 species from distant lands. Tropical trees growing over 7 meters high, among them colorful epiphytic orchids, bromeliads, ferns, succulents, and cacti, provide a varied spectacle for visitors.

The fern collection, comprising more than 100 species and varieties, is one of the richest in the country. Among the 400 species of succulents, the largest growing are agaves, but aloes, lily family plants, and spurges also provide striking sights.

Nature lovers are welcome in the Erzsébet Park of Újszeged in winter and summer, spring and autumn, the city’s romantic forest park. We owe the beautiful park to the Austrian soldiers who suppressed the 1848–1849 War of Independence. At the site of the park, a wild, uneven wilderness was transformed in 1858 by an imperial officer, Baron Vilmos Reitzenstein, and his soldiers.

More and more people in Szeged are discovering the refreshing charm of life in the park. Professional athletes, mainly walkers, long-distance runners, triathletes, and handball players, have been taking advantage of the park’s excellent conditions for years and eagerly carry out their running training outdoors. Local residents who care at least somewhat about their health are also frequent participants in the park’s bustle.

Come and visit too, the organizers are looking forward to welcoming you!

The actual venue of the dog show is the Dog Training Ground of the Association in the village of Algyő (located 10 minutes from Szeged), where the South Great Plain Association of Dog Breeders and Hobby Dog Owners warmly welcomes every guest and exhibitor with their dogs on October 20th with a high-quality and colorful CAC dog show!
