The MEOE Association and the city of Devecser announce the Shepherd and Herding Dog CAC Exhibition on August 20, 2016. The venue of the exhibition is the Bakonyerdő Zrt. Sárosfő Hunting Lodge in Devecser.

All dogs that have ever performed work related to herding or guarding animals can be entered in the Shepherd and Herding Dog CAC exhibition.

The organization of the exhibition has become a tradition in the life of the city of Devecser. The first exhibition of this kind was held in 1999, when far fewer breeds were eligible for entry than nowadays. Today, nearly 40 breeds of excellent specimens can participate in this exhibition. In the early 2000s, this prestigious event was not held for 6 years, and then in 2009 the exhibition was organized again. From this year onwards, every year the city of Devecser, with the cooperation of the MEOE Association, organizes and holds this special exhibition, which attracts more exhibitors with their dogs each year, and thanks to the colorful and varied programs, the audience also grows every year.

After the red sludge disaster, this year marks the VI. occasion of holding the “exhibition of love,” as Dr. István Simicskó, the main patron of the exhibition, described it.

“Mental sensitivity must also be reflected in our love for dogs. Here there are dog-loving people, loving people, people whose souls are sensitive, who bring their most beautiful dogs, their favorites, prepare them for this exhibition to be held in this beautiful venue, and show how they have raised their dogs so far. It is also a kind of character examination at this time because how we raise our dog, how we keep our dog, reflects a part of our character. And we know that our character precisely determines what kind of people we are. And if we carry out this work, dog keeping, with mental sensitivity, paying attention to our loved ones, paying attention to our family members, since our dogs are also family members, then there can be no big trouble. Whoever loves their dog cannot be a bad person. I trust that this exhibition is about more than just beauty, but also about inner beauty, not just about appearance, but also about inner values. Because these dogs, these pets, these guard dogs, working dogs, shepherd dogs, they are all here for us, serving humans, helping humans, and often in difficult times, in our rushing world, with their love, their attachment, their attention to their owner, they give us spiritual strength. I am glad that so many have come to this beautiful place. I hope everyone will experience much joy, just being here, being together as dog-loving people, that itself is joy. Raise your dogs responsibly and relate with mental sensitivity to your fellow human beings.” – these words opened the Shepherd and Herding Dog CAC exhibition last year by Dr. István Simicskó, main patron.

Starting with these kind words, this year the organizers again warmly welcome exhibitors with their dogs, and lovers and admirers of these breeds, as well as visiting guests to the Sárosfő Hunting Lodge for a shared dog event and a beautiful day spent together!

The city of the Sheepdog and Herding Dog CAC show is Devecser, which lies on the western edge of the Bakony, beside the Torna stream. According to archaeological finds, this area was already inhabited in prehistoric times. Devecser is a settlement known since the Árpád era, and it probably got its name from the Devecseri family. The noble family played a significant role in the life of Veszprém county, building vast estates, castles, and mansions; during this time, the foundations of the predecessor of the current Esterházy mansion were also laid. During the Turkish ravages, Devecser successfully resisted and defended its forts and mansions. After the Turkish wars, a lively commercial life developed in the village, and Devecser soon became the trade center of the region. The formation of the modern city lasted from the Compromise until the turn of the 19th century. From the 1970s onwards, Devecser's development seemed to slow down as Ajka took over its central role. Devecser was granted city status in 1997. The young city’s life was radically changed by the red mud disaster in 2010. In the revived settlement, an exhibition presents this watershed event.

Walking the streets of the city, you can follow the architectural memories of the Baroque and Romantic periods, visit the Baroque parish church to listen to the organ playing, and see the wonderful Saint Anthony altarpiece. Behind the church is the Baroque parish house, built at the same time as the church in the mid-18th century. Next to it stands the school building constructed in the Romantic style in 1881. The village’s school has been here since the late 18th century. Géza Gárdonyi, the author of the historical novel “Eclipse of the Crescent Moon,” taught in the current building between 1882 and 1884.

The pride of Devecser’s main square is the Esterházy mansion, which is under monument protection. The building reflects the stylistic features of Baroque and eclectic architecture.

Devecser Esterházy mansion

As already mentioned, the first building at the site of the current mansion was commissioned by the Devecseri family, who turned the old manor house into a castle. This stronghold came into the hands of the Esterházys in the early 1630s, and its last owner was Count Tamás Esterházy. During years of renovations, the old atmosphere of the castle was restored; the coffers ceilings, Renaissance and Baroque fireplaces, oak doors and windows, and carved stair railings can be seen in their original form.

The English park-style castle garden surrounding the mansion was planted with special trees from 1790 by Ferenc Esterházy. A significant part of the trees are native, and large specimens remaining from the original plantings are particularly valuable, including maple-leaved plane trees, pedunculate oaks, field maples, and white poplars. Unfortunately, the red mud disaster in October 2010 affected the entire castle park area, significantly damaging the historic garden. The main paths representing the former English park style disappeared, trees were damaged, died, or were cut down. The park, with its high-value plant stock, centuries-old trees, and microclimate, attracted many visitors especially in the summer and was one of the most defining venues in the life of the settlement. The complete reconstruction of the castle park could begin in 2013. During the development, besides landscaping and water management, plants were planted, walking paths were created, and an ornithological nature trail and exhibition spaces were established.

This year the Sárosfői Hunting Lodge welcomes the exhibitors and visiting guests!

Devecser city and MEOESZ warmly welcome all interested parties, guests, and exhibitors with their dogs to the Sheepdog and Herding Dogs CAC dog show on August 20!
