Budapest, August 11, 2021, Wednesday (MTI) – The National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) is purchasing dogs that can be trained for search work; owners can apply by e-mail until the end of August – NAV informed MTI in a statement on Wednesday.
Trainers are expecting dogs aged between 10 and 36 months, in excellent health, with vaccination book or passport, equipped with a transponder number or chip, and not neutered. Successful search dog candidates receive a 21-day probation period after selection. Regardless of gender and breed, a four-legged dog can enter the training program if it meets the conditions of the announcement.
NAV is awaiting preliminary offers from owners by August 25 at the navkutyabeszerzes@nav.gov.hu e-mail address; the offer must include the dog's call name, breed, gender, and purchase price. Furthermore, the owner must provide their e-mail address, personal details, and indicate whether they wish to sell the dog as a private individual or as a business entity – for example, as a sole proprietor or limited liability company.
Before the dog purchase date, the office will contact those interested from whom it requests offers: it will then send the invitation to tender and further details of the dog purchase and procurement process.
The detailed conditions of the announcement are available on the NAV website.
In response to MTI’s inquiry, NAV stated that they are currently working with 40 search dogs and plan to acquire and commission 13 new dogs now.
The training duration depends on the training specialization; one-phase training, for banknotes or tobacco products, or their dual training takes 12-14 weeks. For drug detection as an independent specialization, or combined, the dog can be reliably trained in 16 weeks.
Each service dog has one dog handler, and together they form a pair until the dog is withdrawn from service. Every service dog lives with its own owner, dog handler, and their family in their own home, in a family house environment. NAV provides a kennel and dog house that can be placed in their home, as well as all other necessary equipment for maintenance and care.
Service dogs are withdrawn from service due to health considerations or age, generally between 8-10 years old. They remain with their owners afterwards, spending their “retirement years” in the familiar environment – NAV reported.
