The World of Exhibitions – Dog Show at the Monostor Fortress

We arrive at the venue of our next Hungarian exhibition in the illustrated series showcasing the world of exhibitions, to a different region of our small country than in previous episodes.

We arrive at the location of the next Hungarian exhibition in our illustrated series presenting the world of exhibitions, to another region of our small country, unlike the previous ones. We are in Transdanubia, in a wonderful natural environment, where our path is bordered alternately by huge mountain ridges and gentle hillsides. Our route leads through peaceful valleys embraced by giant mountains.

It is a pleasure to be a traveler through this region. But the landscape around us changes suddenly; there is no trace left of the giant ridges with their sky-high trees. Where we pass, a park-like landscape welcomes us, alternated here and there with completely flat areas. Behind us, in the distant horizon, the silhouettes of the mountains still appear, but our path is now bordered by fields and green meadows, with many stacks of straw here and there on the land.

“I love to walk in this beautiful world, where / sunlight spreads over the entire landscape / and sparkles on every plant and branch / in the beautiful little Alföld world.”

We arrive in the eastern region of the Little Alföld embraced by the mountains, to a city of exceptional importance, which has played a key role in our history since the Hungarian conquest. The city of Komárom, thanks to its excellent location, was already a significant economic, cultural, and strategic center of our small country in the distant past. The life of the region was centered around the Komárom fortress system. Besides the change of the national border, the Treaty of Trianon also rearranged the city's boundaries. One part of the divided city remains within Hungary's border, while the other part is still part of Slovakia today.

Komárom Komárom2

Komárom is a border town with nearly 20,000 inhabitants, which remains an important cultural and tourist center in today's times. Among its most significant sights are the Reformed Church, the Roman Catholic Church, the Turul statue, and the Komárom Spa located in the city center, the latter's uniqueness being ensured by mineral-rich healing water springing from a depth of 1268 meters.

The western part of the city is famous for its natural beauty, where the WF Leisure Park is also located, offering numerous relaxation opportunities to visitors in a picturesque setting. The Leisure Park hosts open-air concerts, festivals, all-day family programs, exhibitions, and competitions.

The city's significant tourist attraction is the Komárom fortress system, whose Hungarian members are the Monostor Fortress, the Igmánd Fortress, and the Star Fortress.

The Klapka György Museum is located in the Igmánd Fortress, with its permanent exhibitions featuring prominently the Roman Stone Collection and displays illustrating the history of the Hungarian Navy.

The Monostor Fortress, which also serves as the venue for international dog shows, was built between 1850 and 1871 and is the largest modern fortress in Central Europe. The most advanced architectural techniques of the era were employed during its construction, but by the time construction was fully completed, it had become completely obsolete militarily. Its military function ceased long ago, and today it serves as a tourist attraction and hosts various events.

As I already mentioned, the central Ebtenyésztő Association chose the famous architectural masterpiece, the Monostor Fortress in Komárom, as the location for the 3-day international dog show series following the traditions of recent years. On all three days of the show series, the dog breeders welcomed exhibitors and guests alike with open doors from 7:00 AM.

The hot summer arrived in this region as well, and with the scorching sun, the air was sizzling during all three days. There was an extreme heat that tested both humans and animals alike. Despite this heat, many exhibitors decided to participate in the events with their dogs. The organizing Ebtenyésztő Association also offered an attractive opportunity for exhibitors: this year, uniquely, it was possible to earn Champion titles in the young, adult, and veteran classes within just 3 days at these shows. This unique opportunity attracted many exhibitors, and despite the summer heat, nearly 3500 exhibitors participated at the Monostor Fortress throughout the 3 days. More than half of these exhibitors came from abroad.

The organizers of the exhibition did not only target the exhibitors with the events; they also offered diverse and special programs for families and guests visiting the show.

Among other things, Létai Bonifác, the young breeder of the "Bear from Castle" Leonberger kennel, also told us about this and his exhibition experiences:

"We were eagerly awaiting the Pentecost weekend, as this year the Komárom CACIB was scheduled for then. We live very close, so we attend this event every year.

As spectators, we attended all three days, but we only entered on Monday because we are waiting for the 1-year mark to acquire the HCH title. The venue was the usual Monostori Fortress, an excellent setting for a dog show. Unfortunately, the weather was not as favorable, with extreme heat prevailing throughout, which tested us as well, not to mention our four-legged friends. While we waited for the judging, it was possible to cool down under the huge pavilions that are already customary in Komárom, but the judging rings could not fit under the tents. Despite the heat, most dogs performed excellently; Casey and I earned Excellent 1, CAC title on Monday.

Within the dog show framework, there was an opportunity to enter hobby dogs as well, which included mixed-breed and pedigree-less but purebred dogs. Small, medium, and large dogs competed separately in both categories, making a total of 6 groups. Three judges ranked the entries: Viktória Miló, Boxer champion; Anita Márkus, international conformation judge; and Attila Márton, managing director of the MEOE Federation. Additionally, there was a weight-pulling championship, frisbee championship, an equine whisperer presentation by Viktóra Hamza, and many other attractions.

So everyone could find a program to their liking, and the many vendors served the guests who got hungry and thirsty. The event was great, and the next edition is coming in October."

Thanks to the photos by "Kutya Egy Dolog," we can also get a glimpse of the exhibition atmosphere.

Many thanks to Létai Bonifác, on behalf of the Bear from Castle leonbergi kennel>> for the interesting report that gave us another insight into the "Colorful and Special World of Exhibitions".

Congratulations to all exhibitors, and especially to the winners for their excellent results at the show!
