The Magyar Nemzeti Kutyafajták Speciál CAC exhibition is organized by the MEOE Association and will take place on January 9, 2016, starting at 9:30 AM. The venue of the exhibition is the Hungexpo Event and Leisure Center "B" Pavilion in Budapest.
Since 1999, the Hungarian Dog Breeds Committee annually organizes the National CAC Special exhibition at different locations across the country, a nationwide meeting of breeders/exhibitors of Hungarian dog breeds.
Our 9 Hungarian dog breeds, which the National Assembly declared national treasures along with our national animal breeds in its resolution on April 19, 2004:
Our shepherd dogs:
The Komondor – "One of the oldest Hungarian shepherd dog breeds, which has preserved its millennia-old characteristics in appearance and behavior. Its ancient form came to the Carpathian Basin with the migrating, shepherding ancient Hungarians. Its large body, strength, and courage made it suitable to fight against enemies of similar or larger size in defense of the entrusted values. Today, it increasingly serves to protect the house, the farmstead, and agricultural yards."
The Kuvasz – "Its exact origin is shrouded in mystery, it is presumed that dogs very similar to the present Kuvasz served our ancestors already during the Migration Period. The flock, herd, and cattle had to be continuously protected against predators and thieves. Because of its appearance and size, it is an imposing, lean, and resilient dog breed. It rewards care richly. What it has learned once, it never forgets."
The Puli – "The most well-known Hungarian herding shepherd dog worldwide, kept and bred in several countries. The Puli is a graceful, trotting, medium-sized dog, whose dense, curly coat reveals only its charming black nose."
The Pumi – "An immensely intelligent, genuine clown. In the 17th–18th centuries, French-origin terrier-type herding dog breeds accompanying the Merino sheep to our country crossed with the Puli, creating a dog with shorter hair than the Puli and playful, with pom-pom ears bent from the upper third. A good portion of the Puli's unmatched intelligence merged with the restless, fidgety nature of terriers."
The Mudi – “Even in Hungary this healthy, intelligent, attractively looking herding dog is not very well known. It is an erect-eared herding dog with wavy or curly coat, with short, smooth hair on its face and the front side of its legs. The Mudi has retained its excellent herding instinct, making it an ideal dog for professional shepherds as well as for those interested in herding sports. Many other sport enthusiasts will also not be disappointed if they choose a Mudi for themselves.”
Our hunting dogs:
The Short-haired Hungarian Vizsla – “It looks at the world with kind, warm brown eyes and mischievous roguishness, with eager attention and longing for the game. It lazily stretches out at home next to the hot stove or on the couch, endlessly craving petting, but in an instant it becomes explosive energy, endless galloping in the field under the blazing sun or in the crackling snow. From this come two fundamental traits: adaptability and easy trainability. Thanks to these, it has more and more followers worldwide.”
The Wire-haired Hungarian Vizsla – “The story of the Wire-haired Hungarian Vizsla began 70 years ago. The breed was created by crossing the Short-haired Hungarian Vizsla and the Wire-haired German Vizsla with strict selection. Thanks to its coat, it is very resilient, highly intelligent, easy to train and disciplined, but it does not tolerate rough treatment or harsh training.”
The Transylvanian Hound – “It was an indispensable, well-established resident of the Hungarian royal and Transylvanian princely courts. Its history over the centuries has been closely intertwined with Hungarian history, particularly with the fate and everyday life of the Hungarian nobility. The Transylvanian Hound clearly shows the typical hound characteristics: drooping ears, sickle-shaped tail, and a body typically enclosed in a rectangular shape.”
The Magyar Agár – “Sighthounds are the oldest dog breeds, humanity’s oldest companions. They helped humans with hunting that provided daily livelihood and took care of the family’s protection. The history of the Magyar Agár can be traced back to the time of the Hungarian conquest. As a hardy breed, sighthounds easily and well adapted to the changed conditions of today’s modern world.”
An eternal quote addressing the dog-loving generations of today and the future:
“Only a nation that values itself has a future,
Only a nation values itself that honors its values,
Let us love and cherish the Hungarian Dog.”
