Organized by the MEOE Federation and the Hungarian Dog Breeds Committee, the Hungarian National Dog Breeds Special CAC exhibition will take place on November 30, 2019, starting at 09:00 AM. The venue of the exhibition is Pavilion “A” of the Hungexpo Exhibition and Leisure Center in Budapest.
The Hungarian Dog Breeds Committee has been organizing the National CAC Special exhibition annually since 1999 at different locations across the country, the national meeting of breeders/exhibitors of Hungarian Dog Breeds.
The 9 Hungarian Dog Breeds which the Parliament declared a national treasure along with our national animal breeds in its resolution on April 19, 2004.
Our Shepherd Dogs:
The Komondor – “One of the oldest Hungarian shepherd dog breeds, which in appearance and behavior has preserved its millennia-old characteristics. Its ancient form arrived in the Carpathian Basin with the migrating, herding ancient Hungarians. Its large body, strength, and courage made it suitable to fight enemies of similar or larger size in defense of the entrusted values. Today, it serves increasingly to protect the house, farmstead, and farmyards.”
The Kuvasz – “Its exact origin is unclear, it is assumed that even during the migration period dogs very similar to today’s Kuvasz served our ancestors. The flock, herd, and cattle had to be continuously protected against predators and thieves. Due to its appearance and size, it is an impressive, lean, resilient dog breed. It richly rewards the care given to it. What it has learned once, it never forgets.”
The Puli – “The most famous herding Hungarian shepherd dog worldwide, kept and bred in many countries. The Puli is a graceful, quick-stepping, medium-sized dog, whose dense, curly coat is only broken by a charming black nose leather.”
The Pumi – “A dog blessed with tremendous intelligence, a true clown. In the 17th – 18th centuries, the French terrier-type herding dogs accompanying the Merino sheep into our country crossed with the Puli, resulting in a dog with shorter hair than the Puli, playful, and ears bent from the upper third like pom-poms. A good portion of the Puli’s unmatched intelligence is combined with the restless, fidgety nature of terriers.”
The Mudi – “Even in Hungary not many people know this healthy, intelligent, good-looking herding dog. A prick-eared herding dog with wavy or curly coat, carrying short, smooth hair on its muzzle and the front side of its legs. The mudi has preserved its excellent herding instinct, making it an ideal dog for professional shepherds as well as those interested in herding sports. Many other sports enthusiasts will not be disappointed if they choose a mudi for themselves.”
Our hunting dogs:
The Short-haired Hungarian Vizsla – “Looks at the world with kind, warm brown eyes and a mischievous face, with eager attention and longing for the game. Lazily stretches out at home by the warm stove or on the couch, endlessly craving petting, but can transform in an instant into explosive energy, endlessly running across the field in the blazing sun or crunchy snow. From this follow two fundamental traits: adaptability and ease of training. Thanks to these, it has an increasing following worldwide.”
The Wire-haired Hungarian Vizsla – “The history of the Wire-haired Hungarian Vizsla began 70 years ago. The breed was created through a cross between the Short-haired Hungarian Vizsla and the Wire-haired German Vizsla under strict selection. Thanks to its coat, it is very resilient, highly intelligent, easily trainable and disciplined, but does not tolerate rough treatment or harsh training.”
The Transylvanian Hound – “It was an indispensable, well-known resident of the Hungarian royal and Transylvanian princely courts. Its history over the centuries has been closely intertwined with Hungarian history, especially with the fate and everyday life of the Hungarian nobility. The Transylvanian Hound clearly shows the typical hound characteristics: drooping ears, sickle-shaped tail, and typically rectangular body.”
The Hungarian Greyhound – "Greyhounds are the oldest dog breeds, the oldest companions of humans. They helped people in daily subsistence hunting and took care of family protection. The history of the Hungarian Greyhound dates back to the time of the conquest. As a resilient breed, greyhounds easily and well adapted to the changed circumstances of today's modern world."
An ever-valid quote addressing today's and future generations of dog lovers:
"Only the nation that values itself has a future,
Only the nation that values its own values appreciates itself,
Let us love and appreciate the Hungarian Dog."
