The city of the guard and protection CAC dog show is Jászberény, which lies in the heart of the Great Plain on both banks of the Zagyva River. As the “capital of Jászság,” Jászberény is the second most populous city in the county.

According to archaeological finds, the area was inhabited even in prehistoric times, with the Celts and later the Avars settling in this area. The settlement was established specifically during the reign of the Árpád dynasty, unfortunately completely destroyed by the Mongol invasion.
The Jász people populated this region in the 13th century. From that time on, Jászberény became the spiritual, economic, and religious center of Jászság. During the Turkish era, the city belonged to the sultan’s private treasury; a palisade fortress was built for its defense, which unfortunately was destroyed by fire and never rebuilt. The city also took part in the War of Independence of 1848-49; volunteer troops recruited from Jászság formed the Lehel Hussar Regiment in Jászberény. After the 1950s, the city increasingly developed, the first major industrial plants were established, providing more job opportunities for the population.

Among the sights of Jászberény, the first to mention is the Jász Museum, operating since 1931, which presents the written and material relics of the past of the Jasz people within its permanent exhibitions. The most valuable piece of the collection displayed in the monument building is the richly carved ivory horn, the Lehel's horn, which, according to legend, belonged to Lehel, a leader of the Hungarians who raided Germany at the end of the 10th century. The Hamza Museum and the Jász Gallery represent the painterly work of Ákos Hamza, painter and film director, and the museum also preserves the 600-volume library of Ákos Hamza.

Other historical sights in the town include the Gothic-origin and Baroque-style Church of Our Lady of the Hungarians, the Franciscan Church, built in the 15th century, and the Ascension of Jesus Roman Catholic Church.

Jászberény has a lively cultural life thanks to its annually recurring events, such as the International Dance House and Music Camp, the Csángó Festival, the National Honey Fair, and the Jászberény Summer. The internationally renowned Jászság Folk Dance Ensemble, the Lehel Ballroom Dance Club, the János Palotásy Mixed Choir, and the Mihály Székely Choir also operate in the town.

For families, the Zoo and Botanical Garden, operating since 1979, can provide real recreation, as with its 4.5-hectare area it is one of the smallest zoos in Hungary. For almost two decades, the zoo presented a nearly unchanged image, but from the mid-1990s great changes began, replacing narrow closed cages with spacious enclosures and introducing further nature-close innovations.
The zoo’s goal is to keep and showcase the animals under the best possible conditions, so the enclosures are spacious and enriched with environmental elements, imitating natural habitats. Like domestic zoos, their main task is considered to be education and environmental protection awareness.

At the zoo, visitors are welcomed every day with zoo-pedagogical feeding shows. During the programs started in 2001, the animals receive their daily food, for which they often have to work, while visitors can hear lots of information about the animals.
In 2003, the zoo began to expand towards the arboretum, literally taking visitors into the forest, where within the 2-hectare arboretum there are three educational trails, along which visitors can learn many important things, for example about bird and forest protection. The Bird Protection Trail, at 41 stations and 50 information boards, presents more than 90 animal species with colorful images, 66 bird protection tools and methods. The aim of establishing the trail was to attract visitors’ attention to the arboretum next to the Jászberény zoo and thereby incorporate it into environmental education.

MEJÁSZ warmly welcomes all interested parties, guests, and exhibitors with their dogs to the special autumn season exhibition in Jászberény!
