The city of the guarding-protection CAC dog show is Jászberény, which lies in the heart of the Great Plain along both banks of the Zagyva River. As the "capital of Jászság," Jászberény is the second most populous city in the county.
According to archaeological findings, the area was inhabited since prehistoric times, with Celts and later Avars settling here. The town was specifically founded during the Árpád era, but was completely destroyed during the Tatar invasion.
The Jász people populated this region in the 13th century. From that time, Jászberény became the intellectual, economic, and religious center of Jászság. During the Turkish era, the city belonged to the Sultan’s personal treasury, and a palisade castle was built for its defense, which unfortunately was destroyed by fire and never rebuilt. The city also participated in the 1848-49 War of Independence, with volunteer recruits from Jászság forming the Lehel Hussar Regiment in Jászberény. After the 1950s, the city progressively developed with the establishment of the first large industrial plants, providing more employment opportunities for the population.
Among the sights of Jászberény, the first to mention is the Jász Museum, operating since 1931, which presents the written and material memories of the past of the Jász people within its permanent exhibitions. The most valuable piece in the collection displayed in the historic building is the richly carved ivory horn, Lehel's horn, which, according to legend, was possessed by Lehel, a hero and leader of the Hungarians who raided Germany at the end of the 10th century. The Hamza Museum and the Jász Gallery represent the painterly work of Ákos Hamza D., painter and film director, and the museum also preserves his 600-volume library.
Other historical sights in the town include the Gothic-origin, Baroque-style Church of Our Lady of Hungarians, the Franciscan Church, built in the 15th century, and the Ascension of Jesus Roman Catholic Church.
Jászberény has a vibrant cultural life thanks to its annually recurring events such as the International Dance House and Music Camp, the Csángó Festival, the National Honey Fair, and the Jászberényi Summer. The internationally renowned Jászság Folk Dance Ensemble, the Lehel Ballroom Dance Club, the János Palotásy Mixed Choir, and the Mihály Székely Choir also operate in the town.
For families, a real relaxation can be found at the Zoo and Botanical Garden, operating since 1979, which, with its 4.5-hectare area, is one of the smallest zoos in Hungary. For nearly two decades, the zoo presented an almost constant appearance, but from the mid-1990s major changes began: narrow closed cages were replaced by spacious enclosures, and further nature-close innovations were introduced.
The goal of the zoo is to keep and present the animals in the best possible conditions, therefore the enclosures are spacious and enriched with environmental elements imitating the natural habitats. Like other domestic zoos, they consider education and environmental protection training as their primary tasks.
At the zoo, visitors are welcomed every day with zoo pedagogical feeding demonstrations. During the programs started in 2001, the animals receive their daily food which they often have to work for, and the visitors can hear a lot of information about the animals while doing so.
In 2003, the zoo began expanding towards the arboretum, literally taking visitors into the forest, where there are three nature trails within the 2-hectare arboretum; by following these, visitors can learn many important things, for example about bird and forest protection. The Bird Protection Trail presents more than 90 animal species with colorful pictures, 66 bird protection tools, and methods over 41 stations and 50 information boards. The aim of establishing the trail was to involve visitors also in the arboretum next to the Jászberény zoo and thereby in environmental education.
All interested parties, visitors, and exhibitors with their dogs are warmly welcomed to the special spring season exhibition in Jászberény by MEJÁSZ!
