The city of the Guard-Protection CAC dog exhibition is Jászberény, located in the heart of the Great Plain along the two banks of the Zagyva River. Jászberény, known as the "capital of Jászság," is the second most populous city in the county.
Archaeological remains suggest that the area was inhabited even in prehistoric times; Celts and later Avars settled in this region. Specifically, the settlement was formed during the reign of the Árpád dynasty, but was unfortunately completely destroyed during the Mongol invasion.
The Jász people populated this area in the 13th century. From this time on, Jászberény became the intellectual, economic, and religious center of Jászság. During the Turkish era, the city belonged to the sultan's private treasury, and a palisade castle was built for its defense, which was unfortunately destroyed by fire and never rebuilt. The city also took part in the 1848-49 War of Independence; the Lehel Hussar Regiment was formed in Jászberény from volunteers recruited from Jászság. After the 1950s, the city began to develop more and more, with the establishment of the first large industrial plants providing more employment opportunities for the population.
Among the sights of Jászberény, the first to mention is the Jász Museum, operating since 1931, which within the framework of its permanent exhibitions presents the written and material relics of the Jász people's past. The most valuable piece of the collection exhibited in the historic building is the richly carved ivory horn, the Lehel horn, which according to legend was owned by Lehel, a hero of the Hungarian raids in Germany at the end of the 10th century. The Hamza Museum and the Jász Gallery represent the pictorial work of Hamza D. Ákos, painter-filmmaker, and the museum also preserves Hamza D. Ákos's 600-volume library.
Other historical sights in the city include the Gothic-origin and Baroque-styled Church of Our Lady of the Hungarians, the Franciscan Church built in the 15th century, and the Roman Catholic Church of the Ascension of Jesus.
Jászberény has a lively cultural life thanks to its recurring annual events, such as the International Dance House and Music Camp, the Csángó Festival, the National Honey Fair, and the Jászberényi Summer. The city is home to the internationally renowned Jászság Folk Dance Ensemble, the Lehel Ballroom Dance Club, the Palotásy János Mixed Choir, and the Székely Mihály Choir as well.
For families, the Animal and Botanical Garden, operating since 1979, can provide real relaxation; with its 4.5-hectare area, it is one of the smallest zoos in Hungary. The zoo showed almost the same image for nearly two decades, but from the mid-1990s, major changes began: the narrow closed cages were replaced by spacious enclosures, and further nature-friendly innovations were introduced.
The aim of the zoo is to keep and exhibit the animals in the best possible conditions; therefore, the enclosures are spacious and enriched with environmental elements, imitating their natural habitats. Like other domestic zoos, they consider education and conservation awareness to be their main tasks.
At the zoo, guests are welcomed every day with zoopedagogical feeding demonstrations. During the programs started in 2001, the animals receive their daily food, for which they often have to work, and visitors can hear a lot of information about the animals at the same time.
In 2003, the zoo began expanding toward the arboretum, literally taking visitors into the forest, where within the 2-hectare arboretum, there are three nature trails. By walking these trails, visitors can learn many important things about bird and forest conservation, for example. The Bird Conservation Trail at 41 stations, with 50 information boards, presents over 90 animal species with colorful pictures, and showcases 66 bird protection devices and methods. The aim of creating the trail was to involve the arboretum next to the Jászberény Zoo in visitors’ attention and thus in environmental education as well.
Everyone interested, guests, and exhibitors with their dogs are warmly welcomed to the special spring season exhibition in Jászberény by MEJÁSZ!
