Introducing the dog show city, Jászberény

The city hosting the guard-protection CAC dog show is Jászberény, which is located in the heart of the Great Plain on both sides of the Zagyva River. Jászberény, known as the “capital of Jászság,” is the second most populous city in the county.

According to archaeological finds, the area was already inhabited in prehistoric times, later settled by Celts and then Avars in later periods. Specifically, the settlement was established during the rule of the Árpád dynasty, but was completely destroyed by the Mongol invasion.

The Jasz people settled this region in the 13th century. From that time on, Jászberény became the spiritual, economic, and religious center of the Jászság. During the Turkish times, the city belonged to the sultan's private treasury; a palisade fortress was built for its defense, which unfortunately fell victim to fire and was never rebuilt. The city also took part in the 1848-49 War of Independence; the Lehel Hussar Regiment was formed in Jászberény from volunteers recruited from Jászság. After the 1950s, the city increasingly started to develop, with the establishment of the first large industrial plants, which provided more job opportunities for the population.

Among the sights of Jászberény, the Jász Museum, operating since 1931, must be mentioned first, which presents the written and material relics of the Jasz people's past within its permanent exhibitions. The most valuable piece in the collection exhibited in the historic building is the richly carved ivory horn, Lehel’s horn, which according to legend was owned by Lehel, one of the heroes of the Hungarian adventurers in Germany at the end of the 10th century. The Hamza Museum and the Jász Gallery represent the painterly work of Hamza D. Ákos, painter and film director, and the museum also preserves Hamza D. Ákos’s 600-volume library.

Additional historical sights in the city include the Gothic-origin and Baroque-styled Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Hungarians, the Franciscan Church built in the 15th century, and the Roman Catholic Church of the Ascension of Jesus.

Jászberény has a lively cultural life thanks to its annual recurring events, such as the International Dance House and Music Camp, the Csángó Festival, the National Honey Fair, and the Jászberényi Summer. The internationally renowned Jászság Folk Dance Ensemble, the Lehel Ballroom Dance Club, the Palotásy János Mixed Choir, and the Székely Mihály Choir also operate in the city.

For families, a real relaxation can be had at the Zoo and Botanical Garden, operating since 1979, which, with its 4.5 hectares, is one of the smallest zoos in Hungary. The zoo showed almost constant conditions for nearly two decades, but from the mid-1990s major changes began: narrow closed cages were replaced with spacious enclosures and further nature-close innovations were introduced.
The goal of the zoo is to keep and display the animals in the best possible conditions; therefore, the enclosures are spacious and enriched with environmental elements, imitating natural habitats. Like domestic zoos, their main task is considered education and nature conservation awareness.

Every day, the zoo welcomes guests with zoo-pedagogical feeding demonstrations. During the programs started in 2001, the animals receive their daily food, for which they often have to work, and visitors learn a lot of information about the animals in the meantime.
In 2003, the zoo began expanding towards the arboretum, literally bringing visitors into the forest, where within the 2-hectare arboretum there are three nature trails, through which visitors can learn many important things, for example about bird and forest protection. The Bird Protection Nature Trail, across 41 stations and 50 informational signs, presents more than 90 animal species in color pictures, 66 bird protection devices, and methods. The purpose of creating the trail was to involve visitors' attention towards the arboretum next to the Jászberény zoo and thereby into environmental education.

Come and visit, the organizers welcome you warmly!
