Dogs are the animals domesticated by humans the longest. Thanks to their long relationship with humans, they are uniquely sensitive to human behavior. Despite the fact that the two species have lived in close connection for 15,000 years, people often do things they believe dogs like, but it turns out dogs definitely do not like those things.
Below we present some typical human behaviors that dogs dislike, hate, or detest!
1. Hugging
We often hug our dogs because as humans we enjoy hugging each other, expressing our love and sympathy this way, and it logically follows for us that our beloved dogs also gladly receive and enjoy hugs. Most dogs actually do not enjoy being hugged; some tolerate it quietly and calmly, and because they love their owner, they endure it from them, while other dogs get scared, afraid, restless, or nervous during hugging and signal to their owner that they do not like this behavior. It may also happen that the same dog reacts completely differently to hugging depending on the family member – tolerating it from one but not at all from another.
Inappropriate human behavior and ignoring or misinterpreting the signals given by the dog can lead to serious problems. One of the most serious problems concerns children. Inappropriate behavior towards a dog, whether hugging or any other improper conduct, can lead to serious accidents. According to an American survey – recently published by the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association), which unites veterinarians in the USA – children suffer the most dog bites and attacks every year, not only in America but in all countries worldwide, most often due to inappropriate behavior of children towards dogs.
Observing a dog's body language in every situation is very important so that you can easily decide how they feel at any given time. We now provide some help for this: if you browse through our article “How Dogs Show They Are Afraid or Anxious”, you will see illustrated signs of fear among others mentioned in the article.
If a dog or dogs live with your child/children in your family, it is important that you never forget the following rules!
2. Improper attitude, handling, and rough treatment
Other forms of improper treatment, such as bathing, nail trimming, grooming, veterinary examinations and treatments, and so on, as well as the situations and handling involved with these, can also be frightening for a dog. It is important to behave calmly in these situations and cooperate appropriately with our beloved dogs so they do not experience these as stress, especially for puppies who remember their first negative experiences and do not forget them throughout their lives. Therefore, it is very important that even a visit to a groomer or a veterinary examination is not experienced as a bad experience by our beloved dog and does not remain as such in their memory.
3. Incorrect mindset and communication
To understand, dogs have indeed changed a lot over the years, especially recently, research universities place particular emphasis on the cognitive understanding of dogs. Thanks to the results of research projects, from time to time we gain a lot of new information and knowledge if we get to know, accept and apply all of this. Nevertheless, many people still cling to long-refuted and outdated views. This philosophy can lead to improperly treated and trained dogs and cause fearful or even aggressive behavioral forms from them.
4. Poor training methods
In recent decades, there have been significant changes in dog training as well. Training based on positive reinforcement has come to the fore, as well as early socialization and further training of puppies in specially designed dog school, doggy kindergarten groups, where the owner and their beloved puppy learn the correct behaviors together.
Every dog is unique, an individual and should be treated as such. Training in every dog’s case individually focuses on positive reinforcement and not on punishment for bad behavior, as punishment can trigger even worse behavior in the dog, besides being threatening and unpleasant for them.
5. Inactivity or idleness
Certain dog breeds, especially those bred for various activities (such as herding, shepherd, hunting dogs, sled-pulling and guarding breeds… etc.), if they do not receive enough physical and mental stimulation daily, can become inactive. If the energies of these breeds are not properly channeled, they can get bored and may use their excess energy for destruction. So it is not surprising when the owner comes home from work and finds that the dog has torn the whole apartment apart.
Our beloved dog is fully committed to life and hopes that their owner helps them in this, ensuring the satisfaction of their needs, instead of banishing them to the sofa or garden to be bored day by day.
6. Inconsistency
Dogs do not understand so easily what we want from them, and when the owner or the other family members are inconsistent, it makes it much harder for the dog to understand what is asked of them. It is important for every family member to keep in mind that we are on the same page, whether communicating with words or hand signals, and not confuse the dog. For example, if one family member encourages the dog to sit on the couch, while another family member starts yelling and protesting when seeing the dog on the couch. This is inconsistency and confuses the dog.
A great way to stay consistent is to write down the schedule and post it somewhere visible to everyone (e.g., on the refrigerator), so all family members can read it and avoid inconsistency.
Conclusion
It is our human task to ensure that the lives of our dogs run in the proper channel, to do everything to earn their trust and, along with that, to live a human life that is as little disturbing as possible for our beloved pets.
