We are in the month of August, and soon it will be the Memorial Day of the Foundation of the State, which offers many interesting and entertaining programs for both children and adults. Surely many of you plan to participate in the August 20th celebrations with your families and friends. While these celebrations can provide non-stop fun for people, the same cannot be said for our four-legged family members. The excitement and the loud noises caused by fireworks disturb our pets. Beyond the Christmas holiday season, the August 20th celebrations are unfortunately occasions every year when many pets disappear from their homes due to being frightened by the sound of fireworks.
Loud explosions and the sharp lights of fireworks are disturbing for our pets, and they can panic from all of these, putting themselves and people at risk. When dogs and other animals are scared, they run away from their homes, jump out of open doors or windows, and disappear into the night. Many of them appear frightened, confused, sometimes injured, even several kilometers away from their homes. Those are the lucky ones, while other pets are lost forever.
Therefore, around this time we want to remind every responsible pet owner about the dangers caused by fireworks. Everyone should be aware of how to properly ensure their pet’s safety.
Many pets are afraid of fireworks
The sudden light and sound effects of fireworks frighten pets and can put them in a stressful situation. Even normally quiet dogs get scared by the sudden loud noises and lights. Surely you do not want to scare your pet or put them in a situation where they become aggressive from fear or run away from home due to fireworks!
Dogs and cats have much better hearing and can hear sounds within frequency ranges that we humans never can. A firecracker, or even a small sparkler, can upset our pets’ well-being. And unknown, loud noises can be unsettling for them.
Keep your pet safe
A little advance planning to prevent problems so that the August 20th celebrations will be easier for you, your family, and your pets alike.
- Microchipping is definitely important and can help a lot! If you belong to the group of responsible dog owners, your dog is microchipped and registered by a veterinarian, so your pet is certainly listed in the official pet registry. If your dog gets scared and runs away, they can be identified by the chip number, making it much easier to reunite them with you. If your dog is not microchipped, please contact your veterinarian as soon as possible, who can help microchip your dog and register them in the pet registry system. If something unfortunate happens and your pet gets lost, the microchip alone is a big help.
- Schedule daily walks for early morning! Try to keep active all day long, walk a lot, play a lot, tire out your pet so that by evening, preferably before the fireworks start, they go to rest.
- Do not leave your pet outside, especially after dark! Even a carefully fenced yard cannot keep them safe, because if they get frightened, panic, and try to escape, they are more likely to get injured trying to find a way out of the yard. If they slip out, they can easily be hit by a car or even stolen by strangers.
- If you live within the range of fireworks, try to keep your pet in a safe room during the fireworks and keep them occupied with toys! To reduce the noise caused by fireworks and prevent your pet from running away, take care to close windows, draw curtains or lower blinds. Turn on the TV or radio, or play your favorite music to soften the external noises. Engage your dog, play with them, and this way they can easily get through the few minutes until the fireworks are over.
- If you want to calm your small pet, it is better to do it in a cheerful and lively tone so that you send the message that everything is fine! Avoid empathetic phrases like "everything will be fine, don’t be afraid," as this only reinforces your pet’s fear.
As a loving and responsible pet owner, always pay attention to your pet’s safety!
If you follow all these good tips, you and your pet can happily get through the fireworks period together!
