“Oh, do not say that the Book is not needed today,
that Life and Man are more than the Book;
because the Book is Life too, and lives like man –
thus it lives: man in book, and Man in the Book.”
Quoting the timeless lines of Mihály Babits, in today's modern, internet and media-dominated world, people hardly read. Moreover, electronic publications are slowly pushing paper books to the background. Yet there is nothing better than holding a real book in your hands, running your fingers over the cover, leafing through it and smelling the scent of the book, that is how bookwormery begins. From the moment we take the book in our hands, it becomes our friend and we can hardly wait to take it again and read from it, because reading a book is an experience. On the wings of imagination, we can fly through great adventures, which reach our imagination from the pages of the book through the ability to read, while we can also enrich ourselves with many new and useful pieces of information.
Reading is an experience that requires no special skill, only the ability to read. Reading broadens our horizons, helps discover new things, develops imagination, concentration, and memory; there are abilities that can improve unnoticed through it, for example vocabulary, spelling, and writing skills. Every book expands our knowledge about the world we live in, that our ancestors might have lived in, or that we would like to live in. One book cannot radically change a person's life, but a sufficient quantity and quality of books can shape and form the personality. A book is a true source of entertainment, relaxation, and a tool for learning. It can be an excellent way to relieve everyday stress as it diverts our attention and “transports us to another world.” The book is a true friend, entertains, provides experiences, arouses emotions, captivates and never lets go. A book is timeless and a useful gift for anyone.

W. Bruce Cameron: A Dog's Purpose
352 pages. Novel written from a dog's perspective. Recommended for adults.
Every dog goes to heaven… except if they have unfinished business here on Earth.
The main character of our fabulous story is a cute dog who, through several lives, tries to find out what the purpose of his life really is. This dog story is different from the usual novels about adorable puppies. This story seeks the answer to the most fundamental question of life: why do we live, in other words, what is the meaning of our earthly existence?
Our hero, Bailey, was also astonished to find out that after living through the tragically short life of a stray dog and passing from this earthly existence, he is reborn as a puppy with a stunningly beautiful, golden coat. Taking advantage of the new opportunity, he reaches the embracing arms of an eight-year-old boy named Ethan, with whom they experience countless breathtaking adventures, and meanwhile Bailey learns how to be a good dog.
However, our hero’s adventure does not end with becoming the beloved pet of a loving family. He is reborn again, and once more wishes to discover whether he will ever be able to figure out the meaning of his existence.
Bailey’s story is heartwarming, insightful, and often incredibly amusing to read. In the story, we not only get acquainted with many striking and humorous adventures of our four-legged friend’s numerous lives, but it also reveals how a dog perceives human relationships.
From this captivating and enthralling beautiful story, it becomes clear that love is immortal, that our loyal friends will always stay with us, and that every creature on earth is born for a reason.

A charming and heartwarming story about hope, love, and endless devotion. The Four Ways of a Dog raises the question: do WE, HUMANS, take care of our pets, or do they rather take care of us? The novel is more than just another sweet dog book; it is mainly about eternal loyalty and love overcoming obstacles.

István Czifferszky: Vava – Stories about Dogs
222 pages. Short stories.

The polymath author is primarily known in literary circles as a distinguished hunting writer. The stories in this collection are about man’s best friend, the dog, who is an excellent, intelligent, loyal and, if needed, self-sacrificing companion to humans, or a lonely hero if fate so wills.
István Czifferszky valued dogs highly, but most of all the relationship between dog and owner, which he defined as a bond of fate in the titular story: "the bond of fate, that bond which is only possible between a human and their dog, if they are meant for each other." Such a bond exists between Vava and her owner, or between Jancsi, the dam keeper's son, and a huge Newfoundland dog, whom the little boy himself rescued from the flooding Danube in the story titled "Dog in the Flood." The volume not only tells about the formation of this bond of fate, but also when this bond is broken for some reason, as in "The Great Robber," or expands, in certain cases with a little lamb (The Limping Lamb and the Kuvasz). The closing story is a very charming and humorous example of the bond of fate, where an old man is "taken care of" by his dog.

Brad Steiger – Sherry Hansen Steiger: Wonderful Stories About Dogs
262 pages. Short stories and narratives.

The collection tells about sixty everyday dogs who have proven themselves capable of miracles. We read about small-sized, purebred dogs who stop highway robbers; extraordinarily quick-witted dogs who save entire families from life-threatening fires; and also about persistent wanderers who return home even from hundreds of kilometers away, overcoming dangerous conditions. There are also heart-wrenching stories where dogs communicate — and create a connection — with their owners beyond the physical world’s boundaries.

Gerald Durrell: The Most Beautiful Dog Stories
264 pages. Stories and short stories about dogs.

Many have written about dogs in many ways; they are beloved heroes of most artistic fields. The volume, which was published with a foreword by Gerald Durrell, includes almost exclusively works by Anglo-Saxon authors. The author introduced the book with these words:
“I believe the dog is one of man’s most successful domestication experiments. In fact, we have even surpassed nature itself, since as a result of our machinations, more dog breeds have appeared than exist in nature. They show the most astonishing variations in color, shape, and size, from the Irish wolfhound and the mastiff to the Chinese palace dog and the Chihuahua. They have dewlap, are wrinkled, their ears hang down or stand erect, their tails are docked or swing like furry balls. There are brown, black, golden, or spotted ones, like quail eggs — such as the Dalmatian. One thing, however, whatever their appearance, is common: they are extraordinarily developed personalities. There are no two identical dogs, as these wonderful stories will also prove.”
Dogs, with whom existence can be shared, are strange and wonderful creatures, and life cannot be complete without a dog, but this is only true if we do not start worshiping them. They have their own intelligence and wisdom. I have met good dogs and bad dogs, stupid and intelligent ones, but I have never been without a dog. As the Greeks say, a house is not a home until a swallow nests under the eaves, similarly I believe that a house becomes a home when there is a dog in it. I believe this book eloquently proves how incredibly versatile and enchanting animals dogs are. Read and enjoy these few stories, the best among those ever written about dogs.”

Adam David Russ: Bloodhound in Uniform
240 pages. Documentary novel.

A book about how a fantastic, highly skilled dog can assist police work. Humorous, adventurous… A great read!
Our main characters are Mike Serio and his dog JJ. But JJ was no ordinary dog; he was a true bloodhound. Mike and JJ lived and worked in Salt Lake City, although their story is naturally not so simple. Think about which dog breed immediately comes to mind when asked about police dogs? Nine out of ten would say the German Shepherd. And they wouldn’t be far off, because law enforcement agencies accepted this viewpoint for a long time. Serio is the police officer who tries to prove that a bloodhound can indeed be useful to the police. At first, few believed him and other dog handlers didn’t particularly like JJ, but time and JJ’s results proved that bloodhounds are indeed suitable for police work. We read many stories that JJ was able to solve and some that, unfortunately, he was unable to solve. I would like to pause for a moment here: regarding unsolved cases, somehow the media always placed greater emphasis on them, which benefited neither the police nor the dogs.
You can learn a lot about police work from the book, especially about the work of police officers with dogs. Besides the media paying more attention to cases where dogs are deployed, their work is also more dangerous because they have to hold the leash instead of their weapon. JJ’s story is a success story, thanks to whom a stereotype was shed and an effective “tool” was utilized.” It was almost known from the moment of his birth that he was more talented than the others. He was not even two years old when he caught his first criminal, and during his nine years with the force, he tracked burglars, rapists, drug dealers, missing children, and killers; he helped bring nearly three hundred Utah criminals to prison. Jessie Junior – called JJ by his friends, officially Michael Serio police officer’s partner, and by the bad guys “that damned mutt” – before him, bloodhounds were barely used as police dogs in the western United States, and not at all in Utah. Although JJ could not raise his voice against this injustice (though many described him as “having a voice like a sea lion that swallowed a foghorn”), his performance convinced the skeptics.”
The author, Adam David Russ, is an assistant editor at the Blue Moon Literary & Art Review. His short stories have won awards from Writer’s Digest, The Baltimore Review, and New Millenium Writings, and have been featured on the Stories on Stage program. Adam, the child of military parents, a Peace Corps volunteer, economist, and math teacher, is currently working on his next book. He lives in Northern California with his wife and son.
