Dogs love to sleep, they spend quite a lot of their free time sleeping or resting, thus they often change their sleeping positions.
Just like us humans, dogs also turn around while sleeping in the most common sleeping positions, lying on their stomach, on their side, or curled up.
It can be observed that some dogs like to sleep on their back, belly up – while their front legs hang in the air or rest on their chest – humorously described as the "dead cockroach" position.
Why do some dogs sleep in this position? Many have asked this question over the past years. And the answer? Keep reading and you will find out! As a prelude, I can reveal that it all comes down to two reasons.
The most comfortable and restful sleep
Dogs like to take different resting and sleeping positions, thereby relieving pressure on certain points of their body.
Usually, they fall asleep on their side, from which position they later turn onto their back. At such times, we see the dog's legs hanging in the air or sideways, in line with their body.
Dogs like this strange position, first of all because it is simply comfortable. Secondly, it also means that they feel safe. Dogs sleeping in this position, lying on their back exposing their belly (the most vulnerable part for predators) and their four legs in the air, clearly signal that they feel completely safe.
The on-back sleeping position is not a behavior observed among wild dogs or wolves. Dogs kept outdoors will not sleep in this position either, as it sends a signal of vulnerability and defenselessness to their peers.
Dogs can only be seen sleeping in this position in a very safe environment, mostly observed in dogs living indoors, which despite the vulnerability, provides them with the most comfortable and restful sleep.
Air conditioning
A dog's belly is more vulnerable and exposed, as this area has far less fur than the rest of their body.
A dog lying on its back opens up its belly to the cooling airflow, thus regulating its body temperature while sleeping. This is the best way for dogs to cool down quickly.
Primarily, dogs living indoors, who use a lot of energy daily or overheat inside, sleep in this position.
