THE VETSCAN SMALL ANIMAL DIAGNOSTIC CENTER HAS BEEN INAUGURATED
A high-field MRI device specifically focused on the examination of small animals has been inaugurated at the VetScan Small Animal Diagnostic Center. Located at 53 Megyeri Road, on the border of Újpest and Káposztásmegyer, the center uniquely offers professional MRI examinations specifically for animals in Hungary, using a 1.5 Tesla MRI device.
“It is important that the most modern examinations are also accessible for animals – and in some cases, this can save their lives,” greeted the audience the popular journalist and presenter, Kriszta D. Tóth, the host of the ceremony and owner of an 85-kilogram Great Dane named Ringo.
The center was officially handed over on December 9, 2015 by Prof. Dr. Tibor Németh, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science at Szent István University, head university professor of the Department and Clinic of Surgery and Ophthalmology, György Leitner, managing director of Vet-Scan Small Animal Diagnostics Ltd., and Dr. Zoltán Kerekes, chief veterinarian of Vet-Scan Small Animal Diagnostics Ltd. After the inauguration ceremony, Dr. Zsolt Sebestyén, veterinarian and small animal neurologist of ProVet Veterinary Specialist Clinic, gave a presentation, highlighting the significance of the new institution in veterinary medicine.
At the opening, it was stated that the newly opened facility fills a gap in domestic veterinary medicine, as there is no other institution specialized in routine MRI diagnostics for animals. Due to the physical size of the 1.5 Tesla MRI device manufactured by GE Healthcare, it is suitable for examining both small and large-sized animals; the strong magnetic field allows the production of high-quality images. Highly trained veterinarians with extensive experience perform the examinations at the center, which can precisely detect the smallest abnormalities that are difficult to notice with other imaging diagnostic methods. After a precise diagnosis, an effective treatment process can begin.
In human medicine, magnetic resonance imaging is often used for diagnosing more complex diseases: there are more than 50 MRI machines performing diagnostic examinations for humans nationwide. The device operating at the VetScan Small Animal Diagnostic Center on Megyeri Road is the country’s first high-field MRI device exclusively dedicated to veterinary applications.
Permissions in progress
The acquisition of permits for the operation of our small animal diagnostic center is currently underway. The center will begin regular operations only after obtaining the necessary permits, expected in January 2016.
