Boogie, the chocolate-colored Labrador Retriever escaped from the police station in Evansville on Saturday morning, just in time to join the runners at the YMCA half marathon. 13 miles later Boogie crossed the finish line.
“My husband took care of him and helped find his owner,” wrote Jennifer Shearer Reed on the 14 News Facebook page. “My husband had to watch him all day since no one knew who he belonged to, but he touched many people’s hearts!”
After the race, the Evansville animal care association took Boogie in at the shelter, where presumably his very proud owner was able to reclaim the dog.
The Evansville police said that Boogie is probably the first dog to have run a half marathon without human assistance. In honor of this great achievement, Boogie was awarded a medal.
In May 2011, a Golden Retriever – Poodle mix dog, Dozen, joined a running team in Maryland and ran 5 miles. No one noticed that Dozen joined them completely on his own without his owner. Although Dozer did not run as far as Boogie, he also received his medal and recognition on the event’s website.
