World Animal Day is a tribute to Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, who already in the early 13th century proclaimed that we must love everything that surrounds us, whether living or non-living. At the heart of his thinking and actions was unconditional love. Most stories about him reveal that he not only carried out blessed missionary work for people but also loved animals and nature very much.
Saint Francis often preached about the relationship between humans and animals. He proclaimed that humanity has a duty to protect and enjoy nature.
Saint Francis of Assisi died on October 3, 1226. Two years later, Pope Gregory IX canonized him. In the mid-20th century, Pope Paul VI declared him the patron saint of environmentalists. For this reason, worldwide on October 4, not only Franciscan monks remember their order founder but also animal and nature protectors hold World Animal Day events.
Let us think and live responsibly! Not only on this day but every day of the year let's love and care for and protect animals responsibly!
