Undoubtedly, beloved pets hold a special place in the hearts of their owners. This was also true in the life of Cristobal Soto, a Chilean animator, who created a wonderful animated film in memory of his departed dog.
"Farewell," a short film by Cristobal Soto, is a tribute to dogs who have gone to heaven.
A touching beautiful story that will fill your heart with emotions
The scenes of the film faithfully reflect the owner's feelings towards his dog. The very first frames fill you with great sadness as the boy says goodbye to his beloved pet, while the dog's thoughts also appear on the screen.
We see the dear old pet closing his eyes, then when he opens them again, he finds himself among the clouds, not knowing how he got there. A guardian angel dog comes to his aid, who has come to guide him as his guardian and lead him into the kingdom of heaven.
Waiting to be admitted at the gate of heaven, memories of beautiful moments spent with the beloved owner erupt from the dog's mind: the joy of the first moments – when they met, the puppy days – when they took part in so many joyful adventures together, many beautiful happy or sad moments they shared over the long years, and old age, the moments of weakness and sadness, all surrounded by mutual love and worry for each other. Memories of many wonderful and loving years spent together surface at that moment.
Ascending the escalator to heaven, the dog suddenly looks back and, for a few seconds, returns through the clouds to his mortal body to say goodbye to his owner. Summoning his last strength, he sits up, looks into his beloved owner's eyes, licks his hand, then collapses and departs definitively from earthly existence…
The story is accompanied throughout not only by the wonderful visual representation but also by the dialogue between the owner and the dogs, which we now present translated into Hungarian along with the touching video:
FAREWELL
Soto, the owner: A life together and now you have to leave. I hoped this day would never come. I won’t leave you, I’ll stay with you…
Rayita: Where am I? What’s happening? Am I flying? Oh no, I’m going to fall!
The Guardian angel dog: arrives: Hi there! And welcome! Don’t be afraid, just move your legs, the clouds are slippery. See? It’s very easy.
Rayita: This is true!
Guardian angel dog: I am your guardian angel! Your earthly life is now over, and that’s why I’m here!
Rayita: As a dog, I had a long life, but I have grown old, and I am tired of moving and playing. Why did it take so long for you to come for me?
Guardian angel dog: You can’t even imagine how much paperwork it takes for you to be here. Dog heaven is a wonderful place, you will love it!
Rayita: Oh, I can hardly wait to be there.
Guardian angel dog: Well… here we are… at the gates of heaven. When we get into heaven, a lot of paperwork awaits us. You’ll have to leave many paw prints on it, here and there… and they might get a bit dirty, but don’t worry, you have to get through this…
Are you listening to me? Hey! Where are you going? The paperwork! The paperwork!
Rayita: There is something important I have to do. I have to say goodbye to my owner and promise him that I will watch over him from heaven for the rest of his life!
I’ll be right back…
In memory of Rayita

The background of the touching story
This moving, emotional video was created by Cristobal Soto, a Chilean illustrator and animator, in memory of his own dog named Rayita, who passed away at the age of 21. Soto received the dog from his parents as a child, with whom he formed a close friendship from the first moment, sharing his childhood and adolescence as well as part of his adult life, as the dog lived a record-long life, twice as long as the lifespan of most dogs.
When his dog was dying, according to Soto, she was extremely weak, shivering with cold, in pain, but before her death, she looked at him for a moment and licked his hand.
The 21 years spent together in love and the extremely sad moments of departure stirred such strong feelings in Soto that the idea of creating an animated film was born in his mind. For two sleepless nights, he listened to the background music until the above story took shape in his head.
Keeping the purity of the story in mind, Soto worked on the material for three months, combining drawing, animation, music, and subtitles. The creator always chooses the background music after the idea is born, before starting the animation creation, and this time was no different.
The animated short film is accompanied by Louis Armstrong’s song “What a Wonderful World,” which is perfectly and melancholically fitting both in melody and message to this wonderful story.
Louis Armstrong: What a Wonderful World
The trees are green,
roses are blushing,
for you and me
they bloom.
And I think to myself,
what a wonderful world.
White clouds run across
the blue sky,
oh blessed days,
hallowed nights.
And I think to myself,
what a wonderful world.
The wonderful colors of the rainbow
shine up in the sky,
and also on the faces of people
who are just passing by.
Hands clasp in friendly greetings.
“How are you?” they ask, and beyond the words: love.
I hear the cry of infants,
I see them growing up,
they will beautifully outrun
those who go before them.
And I think to myself,
what a wonderful world.
Yes, I think to myself,
what a wonderful world…
