In this article, we will say a few words about the golden rules of responsible pet ownership. Please, join me!
The mindset of responsibility is decisive
A responsible mindset is decisive for responsible pet ownership. The first golden rule is the question of responsibility. Deciding whether the family can commit to and provide a suitable life for an animal, whether it is a dog or another type of animal, is the first step.
In Hungary, the culture of pet ownership lags behind European standards. Unfortunately, as a consequence of poor decisions by families, animals, dogs end up in shelters.
Families are not aware of the consequences of their actions, quoting Barbara Hegyi's words: "Animals are not toys that we throw away when we get tired of them. If adults were more responsible, shelters would not be overcrowded with abandoned and abused animals."
Therefore, always think carefully about your decision if you want to take an animal home! Only do this if you can accept the responsibility, obligations, and burdens that come with it! We commit to an animal, a dog for life; in the case of a dog, we expect 10-15 years. Alongside the great joy and love that a dog can give us, this also means commitment and responsibility for families and involves a significant financial expense!
Give love so that you may receive love in return
Secondly, we must mention love. "Buy a puppy, and for your money, you get unconditional love." – writes Rudyard Kipling, the English writer and poet awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. This love must be mutual; we should give as much love to our dogs as we receive from them. Our dogs are family members; they need love, care, and attention, and ensuring this is our responsibility. Along with love, careful training is very important.
Providing appropriate living conditions
The third important rule is to provide the appropriate environment and basic needs for our dogs. The essence of responsible pet ownership is to live harmoniously with our dog in a way that both we and the dog feel good in the relationship, and everything is in harmony with the environment. Always be considerate of your surroundings!
Proper nutrition
The fourth important point is the proper feeding of our dogs. It is important that our dog receives the right amount, quality, and composition of food, which various dog foods can provide best. Ideally, our dog should be fed twice or three times a day at the same time. Dogs tolerate thirst much less than humans, so providing fresh and clean drinking water is also important, especially if we feed our dog with dog food.
Daily routine: engagement, training, education
Fifth, we must talk about spending time, training, and educating our dog. Always devote time to teaching and training your dog, this is especially important for puppies, as they learn much more intensively and easily during puppyhood than as adults. We can also enroll our pet in dog school if we lack experience in this area, and dog school can be a great shared activity, beneficial and enjoyable for both owner and dog.
Exercise is key
The sixth golden rule is to provide exercise suited to the breed’s needs. Different dog breeds have varying exercise requirements, which should be considered when choosing a dog for our family. The need for exercise depends on the breed, type, and temperament! One rule of responsible pet ownership is to ensure adequate exercise for our dog. Long walks with the family are a great experience for dogs, and they thoroughly enjoy every minute. Let’s walk as much as possible with our dogs whenever we can!
The most precious is health
The seventh important factor is the health of our animals, our dogs, which is just as important as our own! Therefore, alongside proper nutrition in puppyhood, giving vitamins is also important. In addition, the puppy must receive all essential vaccinations and be dewormed quarterly. If our puppy or adult dog gets sick for any reason, take it to the vet as soon as possible; do not wait days, as without medical help, their condition can worsen.
You are responsible for the offspring as well
The eighth and final golden rule concerns the issue of offspring. In connection with responsible pet ownership, we are also responsible for the offspring to be born. Therefore, we should only breed a female dog if we are certain that we can find equally responsible owners for the puppies as we are. And if we have a male dog, we should not let him roam freely, as there is always a female dog in heat somewhere nearby. If we did not buy our dog for breeding or showing purposes, I would definitely emphasize the importance of sterilization. Many people think that a female dog must give birth at least once in her life. This is a myth. She does not have to. Let us be responsible owners and sterilize our pet!
The main motto of our article series: „You are responsible, forever, for what you have tamed” – we started the first chapter with this timeless quote and we close the last Hungarian part, the fifth chapter, with it as well. Engrave this into your mind well and never forget it!
