Autumn is a wonderful season, but it holds some dangers and seasonal problems for our dogs. In order to properly protect our pets, we need to be aware of the risks associated with this season.

The fallen autumn leaves

The changing autumn leaves are beautiful, and when they fall, they turn into an impressive ground cover. If we don’t properly take care of cleaning them up, they can cause problems. Be careful during walks and hikes, always make sure your dog does not put fallen leaves into their mouth, lick, or taste them.

Mushrooms

Mushrooms mainly appear quickly with the onset of autumn rains, seemingly overnight, often hidden under the fallen leaf carpet, invisible to us but very much noticeable to our dogs. Do not let your dog come into contact with any mushrooms, bite or eat them. While most mushrooms are benign and if swallowed only cause mild health symptoms, there are some types that can be deadly for them, and even for us humans if ingested. Since mushroom identification is difficult, extra caution is advised!

Pesticides

Pesticides are often used in gardens in the fall. Keep this in mind if you are in someone else’s garden with your dog. Always ask the owner if any parts of the yard have been treated with pesticides; this is very important for ensuring your dog’s health safety!

Antifreeze

Among hazardous substances, antifreeze often poses problems during this time. There are often antifreeze spots left on the street from parked cars here and there; watch out carefully so your dog does not lick these!

Watch your dog on the street and be careful they don’t drink from puddles, because you cannot know if antifreeze has accidentally leaked and pooled there.

If you store coolant at home, always keep it securely locked away so children, dogs, and other animals cannot get to it! Handle used antifreeze containers with proper care!
