Introducing the dog show city, Hajdúdorog
The city hosting the C.A.C national dog show organized by the Hajdúsági Kutyatenyésztők Egyesülete is Hajdúdorog, which is a small town with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants in Hajdú-Bihar county.
According to its historical records, the area of the town was already inhabited in the Copper Age. This is evidenced by a copper axe found in the town’s vicinity, dating back to around 2300-2000 BC. The first documented mention of Hajdúdorog dates back to 1301.
During the Bocskai uprising. After István Bocskai was elected prince, he granted nobility titles to his hajdús (soldiers) and simultaneously secured their settlement in the areas of Böszörmény, Dorog, Hadház, Nánás, Polgár, Szoboszló, and Vámospércs. The new settlement established by the hajdús was a defensive, closed system community. In the center stood a watchtower—the church fortress, surrounded by thick walls with pear-shaped bastions at each corner.
The town participated in the Rákóczi War of Independence, and after its conclusion, a relatively peaceful period began, interrupted only by various epidemics (cholera). During the 1848-49 revolution and war of independence, the hajdús of Dorog bravely took part, providing five captains and several hundred soldiers for the defense of the homeland. After the Compromise, the population of Hajdúdorog began to rise and by the turn of the century had reached 9,900 inhabitants.
Hajdúdorog was granted market town status in 1639, renounced its town status in 1886 and became a village, then a large village. The reason for renunciation was the unfavorable development of historical and economic events. It regained town status again in 1989.
Hajdúdorog is one of the seven historical hajdú towns, which has created nationally renowned cultural-historical values.
The town stands out among all Hungarian-speaking regions in the Carpathian Basin, but especially among the hajdú towns, for its Greek Catholic faith. Hajdúdorog’s most significant building is the Greek Catholic Cathedral. Another outstanding architectural value is the arcaded Town Hall built in the 1660s, with the town's coat of arms decorating its gable.
The town features notable fine art works:
- Jacob wrestling with the angel
- Memorial stones for 1848/49, World War I and II, and 1956
- Hajdús' fountain
- Bocskai equestrian statue
- Roman pilgrimage
- Bust of Greek Demeter
- Memorial tablet of Vitéz Mihály Csokonai and Lajos Farkas
Hajdúdorog’s historical relics, ethnographic values, and church historical treasures are preserved and exhibited by the Local History Collection.
Most of the Hajdú towns, including Hajdúdorog, have excellent quality medicinal water. The city has known since the end of the 18th century that the depths of the earth hide valuable thermal water. The first public bath, the Saint Stephen Bath, opened in the southern part of the settlement in 1900. After its closure, the thermal water resource of Hajdúdorog remained unexploited for long decades. In 1976, a thermal spring was found in the northern area of the city. In 1978, the local government drew up plans to establish a beach bath, but due to lack of funds, the work only started in 1982. The Hajdúdorog Beach Bath was inaugurated in 1983.
The 8.9-hectare park-like bath area has four pools, tennis and football fields, a fishing lake, and a yurt-shaped youth hostel. All the pools are outdoor, so the bath is only open during the summer season. Due to the high dissolved mineral content of the water, it is primarily suitable for the treatment of joint inflammations, muscle and nerve pains. In 2003 – following the examination of the thermal water – it was classified as medicinal water.
Come and visit, the organizers await you with love!
