The fourth dog show of the summer season, the Szentes CAC National Show, which we can participate in organized by the Szentes Dog Breeders and Sporting Dogs Association on July 1, 2017. The venue of the CAC show is the Kalandpark area on the Kurca riverside in Szentes.
The history of the Association organizing the show dates back to 1968. That year it was established under the name Szentes Dog Club, which in 1970, after being admitted as a member club by MEOE, changed its name and continued to operate as the MEOE Szentes Organization. Along with this and at the same time, the organization's dog school was also founded, which back then welcomed dogs and their owners eager to socialize with socialization training and preparation sessions for dog shows.
From the 1980s onward, the Organization enjoyed its heyday, its dog school became increasingly popular, and its membership continually grew until the late 1990s, after which a sharp decline was experienced, similar to other MEOE member organizations. By early 2011, the Organization had fallen to its lowest point, from which it managed to recover through friendly cooperation following the formation of a new management.
At the end of 2011, the MEOE Szentes Organization underwent significant transformation, its legal successor becoming the Szentes Dog Breeders and Sporting Dogs Association. The new Association, maintaining the image of the old Organization, enriches the dog community life with numerous interesting dog-related programs and, further developing the operation of the dog school, now runs it at a higher level with specialized trainers, providing space for exercising with dogs and sports dog activities as well. The well-functioning dog school welcomes learners with socialization, obedience, guard-protection, and show preparation trainings. The dog school’s goals include promoting cultured, responsible dog ownership and widely introducing the possibilities of sports activities with dogs, together with sports dog activities. The dog school’s various courses are open to dogs of any breed and age, purebred or mixed. The dog school of the Szentes Dog Breeders and Sporting Dogs Association warmly welcomes everyone eager to learn and participate in sports!

“In Szentes you can see plenty of greenery, renewed beautiful buildings, youthful energy, hospitable people, the smiles of hospitable people, and the most beautiful thing is always when people know how to smile, because the shortest path between two people is a smile and in Szentes there are only short paths” – with these kind words, the Mayor of the city invites everyone interested to the CAC dog show city, Szentes.
Szentes is located in the Southern Great Plain region, in the northern part of Csongrád county, east of the Tisza River. The city is divided by the Kurca River, which is also a symbol of Szentes. The location of the city allows access by road, rail, waterway, and air.
There are several written records about the history of Szentes, and according to the extremely rich archaeological findings, the settlement has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. During the Hungarian conquest, various ethnic groups passed through this settlement, which continuously fought with each other. The settlement suffered multiple devastations from these fierce battles; the Cumans, Tatars, and then the Turks also destroyed it, but it always revived from its ashes. After the expulsion of the Turks, it became a treasury property. In 1730, it gained town and market rights. At this time, the palm tree symbol appeared on the town seal, and later on its coat of arms, representing the tough spirit of the people of Szentes and their perpetual renewal. The golden age of the town dates back to the 19th century, which was a period of continuous growth. Szentes became the seat of Csongrád county, leading to lively industrialization and rapid urbanization. Economic growth slowed down between the two world wars. After 1945, economic reconstruction began, but culture became dull in the following years. In the 1960s, the city’s agricultural and industrial products became sought after in both eastern and western markets. The transformation started in 1990 triggered a reorganization of the economic life, but the settlement has basically remained agricultural in nature.
Szentes, the city of waters and museums. Szentes is home to numerous museums, among which the Koszta József Museum must be mentioned first; it has been operating since 1897 and today preserves the second-largest archaeological collection in Csongrád county. The Szentes City Gallery opened its doors to the public in the 1970s with exhibitions featuring artists from Szentes and those who originated from Szentes. Since then, the Gallery has annually hosted exhibitions by these artists, as well as ethnographic and numerous other themed exhibitions. The Fridrich-type Photo Studio, built in 1905 and renovated in 1997, is the only rural photo studio in the country, where you can view the photographs, instruments, tools, and devices of János Fridrich and his daughters, as well as other photographers from Szentes. It also stores the photographic collection of the Szentes local history museum. One of Szentes' most visited cultural institutions, the City Library, operates in the former Synagogue building, providing high-quality cultural offerings for both children and adults.
Among Szentes’ other valuable sights, its churches must be mentioned, of which there are plenty in the city. First, the Baroque St. Anne Catholic Church built in the 1760s. It acquired its current classicizing form in 1847. Today, it serves as a regular venue for concerts. The Reformed Great Church is the longest nave church of the Great Plain region, featuring classical and Baroque stylistic elements. The building’s upper gallery houses a church gallery. The St. Nicholas Hungarian Orthodox Church was built in the late 1700s in late Baroque style, featuring an iconostasis and wall paintings inside, and a fresco of St. Nicholas in the external wall niche. The Lutheran Church was built in Neo-Gothic style at the very beginning of the 1900s. The Gothic architectural elements on the building are clearly visible.
One of the city’s curiosities is geothermal energy. The Szentes region has the largest and most densely concentrated geothermal field in Hungary and Europe, with 32 thermal wells in the city providing water hotter than 65 °C. Thus, Szentes hosts the second-largest geothermal heating system in Europe, which has been operating for nearly 20 years and represents a very green and environmentally friendly solution. The Thermal Spa, the hospital, and numerous industrial and agricultural facilities utilize the thermal water. This thermal water contributes greatly to the country’s and Europe’s supply of vegetables, as Szentes paprika and tomatoes are well-known and protected as Hungarian special products (hungarikum).
Szentes is a thriving, vibrant community full of cultural and sporting life, where traditions are respected and nurtured, but opportunities for development are also embraced. The city proudly holds the title of National City of Sport, which it received in 1996. The citizens are sports enthusiasts, and several clubs and associations operate here. Traditionally, swimming and water polo are popular activities, while martial arts and Eastern combat sports have become more popular more recently.
Culture plays a huge role in the city’s life, with events almost every day. The locals strive to organize as many programs as possible to enhance the city’s values and preserve its traditions. The palette includes literary, classical music, theater, and fine art evenings. Their regular events include traditional and unconventional occasions as well as sports festivals. Numerous tradition-preserving events—such as the Winter Farewell Carnival, Summer Theater, and Autumn Square Festival—are held, attracting tourists from far away. Their most popular event since 1999 is the annually organized lecsó festival. In the homeland of paprika and tomatoes, the traditional Hungarian dish lecsó simmers in rows of cauldrons. The cooking contest is complemented by cultural programs.
The city also abounds in natural attractions. One of the most beautiful is the Széchényi Grove, developed over decades and surrounded by the nature of the Kurca River. In 1953, it was declared a local protected natural area by the National Nature Conservation Council. Today, the Grove is a central element of Szentes tourism. The concrete venue of the CAC dog show, the Kurca Riverside Adventure Park, is also located within the Széchényi Grove, where everyone interested, visitors, and exhibitors with their dogs are warmly welcomed on July 1st by the Szentes Dog Breeders and Sporting Dogs Association with a great CAC dog show and colorful dog-related programs.
