At this year's last CAC National Dog Show, which is also a memorial exhibition for Dr. György Szemere, organized and hosted by the South Great Plain Association of Dog Breeders and Hobby Dog Owners, we can participate on October 15, 2017. The location of the dog show is the Dog Training Ground of the Association in Algyő, a village 12 kilometers from Szeged.

The former Szeged organization of MEOE was established around the 1970s. In the decades following its founding, the association tried to unite the local dog community, coordinated the work of breeders and exhibitors, and helped dogs and their owners eager to learn with dog training sessions. The renewal for the organization came in 2012, when it was transformed into an independent association and its name was changed to the South Great Plain Association of Dog Breeders and Hobby Dog Owners. The Association's goal remains to promote the professional breeding of purebred dogs, as well as to introduce and spread cultured dog keeping widely. Their plans include organizing and holding dog shows, kynological events, competitions, popularizing dog sports, facilitating dog training, organizing related events, obedience, guard-protection, agility, coursing, and hunting dog training.

The organization has great traditions in dog shows, as crossing into the 2000s it successfully organized and held a CAC dog show almost every other year. The most recent national dog show it organized was in 2015 and this year it can organize one again. We wish them good organizational work, many beautiful exhibited dogs, lots of kind visitors, and a successfully conducted CAC dog show!

The important information about the 2017 CAC dog show is presented below!

“The most beautiful mirage of the Hungarian Great Plain / You are, native of my city, Szeged” – this is how Gyula Juhász writes about his beloved city in his poem titled “Sonnet to Szeged.” In the landscape poems of Szeged's poet, the Hungarian Great Plain, the landscape around Szeged, and the Tisza River always reappear as main motifs. “On the bank of the Tisza I walk quietly / And listen to what the waves cry / I stop under the cloudy spring sky / And while the water flows and time rushes by / I feel that above the old Tisza / The star of eternal life trembles” – we quoted this small excerpt from Gyula Juhász’s poem “Szeged.” This poem adorns the statue of Gyula Juhász in the Roosevelt Square park on the banks of the Tisza in Szeged, which was erected in memory of the poet in the 1950s.

The city of the CAC dog show is Szeged, the third largest and most populous city in Hungary and the center of the Southern Great Plain region. The history of the city is closely connected with the Tisza River. One of the most defining events in the formation of the current cityscape was the flood of 1879. On the night of March 12th, the Tisza broke through the dam at Petre and flooded the city, which was practically completely destroyed. Only 265 out of 5723 houses remained intact. Most of the city’s population of 70,000 were relocated to other settlements, with only about 10,000 people remaining in Szeged. When Franz Joseph visited, he promised that Szeged would be more beautiful than before. The emperor kept his promise, and over the following years, a new, modern city was built on the ruins. After the water slowly receded, the city was surrounded by embankments. This was when the ring-road structure of the city was formed. Several major European cities also helped in rebuilding the city, which is why sections of the grand boulevard were named after these cities. During the reconstruction, most of the Szeged castle was also demolished. The old buildings were replaced by more beautiful, modern buildings. The city was rebuilt and continuously developed, which resulted in it becoming the county seat of Csongrád in 1962. During the socialist years, its role in the light and food industry was strengthened. In the 1990s, the factories established during socialism went bankrupt one after another. Today, Szeged is the most important city in the region, a university city, and popular among tourists.

Szeged is a historic, charming, and dynamically developing town on the bank of the Tisza. Over the centuries, many nicknames have stuck to the city, so it is called the Famous City, the City of Sunshine, and the Festival City. The city became Famous for its dynamic trade and far-renowned products – such as Szeged salami or paprika – the nearly Mediterranean climate and southern location made it the City of Sunshine, and the year-round cultural events encompassing nearly all branches of the arts – including the Szeged Open-Air Festival – turned it into a Festival City. Gyula Juhász lived in Szeged, Miklós Radnóthy and Sándor Petőfi studied here, and Kálmán Mikszáth drew inspiration from here. Szeged was an outstanding literary center in the past and still plays an important role in the domestic literary life today.

The nickname City of Sunshine was given to Szeged because of a sun-themed decorative feature characteristic of the city’s houses, but the sights are by far not limited to these beautifully decorated residential buildings. There are many landmarks in Szeged: the Szeged Cathedral, the REÖK Palace, the New Synagogue, the Black House, the Count's Palace, the Water Tower, the Town Hall, the Musical Clock, the Szeged National Theater, the Serbian Church, the Reformed Church, the Votive Church, the Móra Ferenc Museum, the Pick Salami and Szeged Paprika Museum, the Anna Bath, the Roman Catholic Church, the Lower Town Church, which you can get to know in detail from this film.

The city offers numerous programs for visiting tourists and locals alike. The museums, galleries, cinemas, discos, and theaters in the city all provide excellent entertainment opportunities. A prominent cultural event is the summer operating Szeged Open-Air Festival, held in the open space in front of the Votive Church, where world-famous opera singers and actors often perform, attracting several thousand spectators to the Dom Square in the evenings. The city also hosts several fairs and festivals. In addition to the wine and beer festival, the fish soup cooking contest and the Szeged Industrial Exhibition held at Roosevelt Square enrich the program offerings. Szeged has a long tradition in kayak and canoe sports. Prestigious sports events held on the high-quality rowing course in Szeged often attract sports enthusiasts to the city. The Kayak-Canoe World Championships were held here in 1998, 2006, and 2011. Besides this, the thermal baths, swimming pools, and open-air beaches along the Tisza River also make the city an ideal tourist destination.

One of the city's most beautiful and high-standard events is the Szőreg Rose Festival. Local residents warmly welcome every year those who, like them, are lovers of roses.

During the three days, there is an opportunity to get insight into the daily lives of rose producers, and interested visitors can learn about the rose fields around Szőreg and the daily work on the fields.

Alongside the current production methods and tools, Hungary's first Rose Museum also showcases century-old material and written memories. The main attraction of the Szőreg Rose Festival is the carnival parade held on Saturday afternoon, where a festive procession decorated with hundreds of thousands of roses parades through the streets of Szőreg. Following the parade, concerts, stage shows, and fireworks entertain the guests of the Szőreg Rose Festival until dawn.

Among the city's specialties are the Szeged Paprika, Szeged Fisherman's Soup, and Pick salami. Szeged Paprika has since become a Hungarikum. In Szeged, the first record containing the word paprika dates back to 1748. According to ordinary people, the priests, who at that time were also teachers and doctors, wanted to spread and naturalize the plant found in their gardens. To prove its usefulness and good taste, they started to eat it. Since the paprika was quite spicy, the priests began to cry. Thus, the word "paprika" developed from "papríkató" (priest's tears). At the beginning of the 19th century, Emperor Napoleon's conquests and the trade embargo he imposed caused a spice shortage, which boosted paprika cultivation; paprika could be produced in commercial quantities. The demand for Szeged paprika powder grew, its fame reached increasingly distant countries, as did the product itself.

Szeged Fisherman's Soup is the most famous along the Tisza River. Its specialty is that it is made from multiple types of fish. The smaller fish, heads, and tails, after cooking, are "pressed through," that is, mashed through a strainer. This thickens the broth but removes all debris. Then the fish meat is cooked into this base broth. Szeged is located on the banks of the Tisza River. The outstanding qualities of Pick salami, its harmonious aroma, and unique taste come from local characteristics. The special nature of the ingredients, the traditional production technology preserving craftsmanship, the climatic conditions related to the proximity of the Tisza, the presence of mold flora, and the preserved trade knowledge passed down from salami master to salami master—all of these contributed to the worldwide success of the now traditional Szeged winter salami.

Szeged is also rich in natural attractions. First, we must mention the Szeged Zoo, Hungary's youngest and largest zoo (450,000 square meters). It specializes primarily in the care of endangered species, with the part of the park displaying South American animals being particularly outstanding.

The animal collection of the Szeged Zoo is not the largest in Hungary. If we only consider the numbers, it is considered a medium-sized zoo. However, if we look at the rarity of the species and their conservation value, the claim that Szeged is one of the most special zoos in our country is justified. A significant portion of the animal species here is considered a rarity even on a European scale. Among domestic zoos, Szeged houses the highest proportion of animals kept as part of international species conservation programs. Of course, popular zoo animals are not missing either; we have lions, meerkats, and camels, and we plan to keep giraffes and spectacled penguins in the near future.

It is less known that zoos also serve as regional nature conservation rescue centers. They receive a large number of injured wild animals, orphaned cubs or chicks, or animals transported, kept without permission, and subsequently confiscated by the authorities. From this perspective, the Szeged Zoo stands out among domestic zoos, especially due to its proximity to the border, playing a significant role in accepting such animals.

The Botanical Garden of the University of Szeged is a mecca for plant and nature lovers. The garden area contains 5120 plant species, about 1800 of which are tropical plants. There are 440 cacti and 470 other succulents. Its specialties are the Chinese giant sequoia and the Indian lotus.

The greenhouse is home to tropical, subtropical, Mediterranean, and desert plants, housing nearly 1200 plant species from distant regions. Tropical trees growing over 7 meters high, among them colorful epiphytic orchids, bromeliads, ferns, succulents, and cacti provide a varied spectacle for visitors.

The fern collection containing more than 100 species or varieties is one of the richest in the country. Among the 400 species of succulents, the agaves grow the largest; aloes, lilies, and spurges also provide an impressive sight.

Nature lovers are welcomed in winter and summer, spring and autumn by Erzsébet-liget in Újszeged, the city’s romantic forest park. We owe the beautiful park to the Austrian soldiers who suppressed the 1848–1849 Hungarian revolution. The wild, hilly wilderness that once stood on the site of the park was transformed in 1858 by an imperial officer, Baron Vilmos Reitzenstein, and his soldiers.

More and more people in Szeged are discovering the refreshing charm of park life. Professional athletes, primarily walkers, long-distance runners, triathletes, and handball players, have been taking advantage of the park’s excellent conditions for years and enthusiastically carry out their running training in the fresh air. Locals who care even a little about their health are also common participants in the park’s bustle.

The actual venue of the dog show is at the Dog Training Ground of the Association in the village of Algyő (10 minutes from Szeged), where the South Great Plain Association of Dog Breeders and Hobby Dog Owners warmly welcomes every guest and exhibitor with their dogs on October 15 with a high-quality and colorful CAC dog show!
