The last CAC dog show of May will be held on May 27, 2018 thanks to the Hungarian Dog Breeders' Tokaj-Hegyalja Association. The C.A.C show venue is in the city of Szerencs at the Rákóczi Castle area.
The organizing Association, the Hungarian Dog Breeders' Tokaj-Hegyalja Association
The former MEOE Tokaj organization was established in the 1960s. In the following decades, the association tried to unite the local dog community, coordinated the work of breeders and exhibitors, and helped dogs and owners eager to learn with dog training sessions. In the 1990s, the organization successfully organized and conducted two CAC dog shows. Renewal came to the organization in 2012 when it transformed into an independent association with a new leadership, and its name was modified to Hungarian Dog Breeders' Tokaj-Hegyalja Association.
In autumn 2015, after 16 years, the Association once again organized a CAC dog show. The event was held under the theme of the duality of dog love and loyalty. The success of the show is proven by the fact that the Association received permission from the MEOE Federation in 2016 and also for this year to organize another CAC show! We wish them good luck and much success in organizing the exhibition!

Introducing the dog show city, Szerencs
The city of the CAC dog show is Szerencs, located in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county at the intersection of trade routes. Szerencs is the commercial and cultural center of the Taktaköz and the southern part of Hegyalja, whose key traffic location, urban character, monuments, and spa attract many visitors to the city. The historic Tokaj-Hegyalja wine region can be reached through the city, hence the name "Gate to Hegyalja," for which a symbolic gate was built, the so-called World Heritage Gate.
The city's history has been preserved in authentic sources, rich in the New Stone Age and medieval finds, indicating that the area around the settlement was already inhabited in prehistoric times. In the 12th century, the Knights Hospitaller founded a monastery here. The first mention of Szerencs dates back to the 1420s. During this period, the town began to develop, and by 1490 it already held the status of a market town. Later, it became the property of the Rákóczi family, and from 1507, John Szapolyai was the lord of the settlement. In 1583, Sigismund Rákóczi received the castle of Szerencs and the noble estate as a pledge from Emperor Rudolf, and in 1603 he also received the final charter of donation. From the 18th century onwards, the settlement began to develop, but this development stalled in the 19th century. In 1876, under the municipal law, Szerencs lost its town status. However, industrial establishment once again promoted development. In 1889, the Szerencs sugar factory was built, which was the largest sugar factory in Europe at the time. In 1923, the Chocolate Factory also began its operation. After World War II, the town became the seat of the Szerencs district. In the 1960s, development received new momentum, existing factories were modernized, a bread factory and machinery factory were built, and new schools were opened. In 1984, Szerencs regained its town status. Thanks to a European Union regulation, the Sugar Factory was forced to permanently close its doors in 2008. In memory of the sugar factory, a Memorial Park was established in 2009, and the day of its closure was declared a memorial day.
One of the town's most significant monuments is the Rákóczi Castle, first mentioned in 1247. The building, developed at the end of the 16th century, is the youngest castle in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, and its history is inseparable from the town's past. Originally, it was the abbey of the Benedictines, whose buildings were converted into a fortress in 1556.
Its owners in the 18th century transformed the castle into a baroque palace and filled in its water moats. Within its walls, two princes were elected: István Bocskai as the Prince of Hungary, and Sigismund Rákóczi was proclaimed Prince of Transylvania here. The castle's beautiful Renaissance details date from his time. The castle was owned by the Rákóczi family between 1586 and 1711, with some interruptions. In the 1950s, several institutions operated within its walls, but the building's condition became increasingly critical. It was then that the idea to save the castle and put it to worthy use was born. Archaeological excavations began in 1968, and based on the plans of Ferenc Erdei, an architect born in Szerencs, the building was renovated and reshaped in a late Renaissance style between 1979 and 1991. The thus renovated castle was handed over for use in the autumn of 1991. Today, the complex operates partly as a hotel and partly as a cultural center.
The Zemplén Museum is also housed in the Rákóczi Castle. The foundation of its local history collection was the private collection of a dentist from Szerencs, which included several thousand postcards, ex libris, photographs, books, ethnographic and local history objects.
Today, the postcard collection consists of more than 900,000 pieces and is currently the largest postcard collection in Hungary. The Zemplén Museum’s material collection is noteworthy in terms of the local history research of the settlement. The material collection consists of historical, ethnographic objects and works of visual arts. Permanent exhibitions include those presenting the history of postcards, Sigismund Rákóczi and his era, and the history of the construction of Szerencs Castle.
Among the town's significant architectural buildings is the Roman Catholic Church, built in the mid-1700s in Baroque style and named after the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Greek Catholic Church, which was built at the end of the 1700s and has a six-tier iconostasis in its triumphal arch, and the Reformed Church, which was built in the 13th century and where Prince Sigismund Rákóczi was buried in 1608; his Renaissance sarcophagus is still on display here.
The name of the town of Szerencs is intertwined with chocolate. There is hardly any person in the country who has not eaten chocolate produced in Szerencs. The Szerencsi Chocolate Factory really began to develop in the mid-1920s. In 1927, their best-known product to this day, Boci chocolate, appeared on store shelves. The “cat” cocoa, trademarked in 1928, was long synonymous with the Szerencs factory. In the 1930s, they also produced candies, milk caramels, bonbons, and desserts, and the brandy cherry and cat’s tongue soon became popular. After nationalization in 1948, the company continued to operate under the names Szerencsi Chocolate Factory and later Szerencsi Sweet Industry Company. The company was purchased by Swiss Nestlé in 1991. Although the world-famous Szerencs chocolate factory has sadly closed, a similar specialty can be found at the sugar museum located on the grounds of the sugar factory, which is also related to the former through its exhibition items.
Here, with the help of documents, objects, and photographs, we can follow the centuries-old history of sugar production in Szerencs, as well as the stories of everyday life and celebrations at the factory. The Szerencs Sugar Museum is Europe’s third sugar museum after the ones in Berlin and Tulln.
One of Szerencs’ most famous and largest events is also connected to the famous Szerencs Chocolate. The Musical Chocolate Festival is held every August in the town. This year, for the 9th time, all chocolate lovers are welcome to the town for this musical, three-day event.
“This small town, this little town has a kind of historical aura and atmosphere, which in my opinion is typical of very few settlements, and I believe this beauty is also present in the souls of the people here. This is a small town that is human-scaled, and its beauty is not only measured in the eyes of the girls who grew up here or the gallantry of the boys, but also in this certain spiritual content.” – with these kind words, Ferenc Koncz, the Mayor of the town, invites all interested people to the town.
These kind words are irresistible. Let’s visit Szerencs and at the same time participate in the CAC dog show! The Hungarian Dog Breeders’ Association of Tokaj-Hegyalja cordially welcomes all interested, guests, and exhibitors with their dogs to a colorful CAC dog show on Sunday, May 27!
