The MEOE Association and Bakonyerdő Zrt. are organizing a Sheepdog and Herding Dog CAC Show on August 17, 2019. The venue of the show is the Sárosfő Hunting Lodge of Bakonyerdő Zrt. in Devecser.

Any dog that has ever performed work related to herding or guarding animals can enter the Sheepdog and Herding Dog CAC Show.

The organization of the show is already considered a tradition in the life of the city of Devecser. The first show of this kind was held in 1999, when far fewer breeds could be entered than nowadays. Today, nearly 40 excellent specimens of breeds can participate in this show. In the early 2000s, this prestigious event was not held for 6 years, but then was held again in 2009. Every year, more exhibitors arrive with their dogs to the specialty show, and thanks to the colorful and diverse programs, the audience increases every year as well.

This year, the organizers warmly welcome exhibitors with their dogs and lovers and friends of these breeds, as well as guests attending, to the Sárosfő Hunting Lodge for a common dog gathering and a beautiful day spent together!

Introducing the City of the Dog Show, Devecser

The city of the Shepherd and Herding Dog CAC exhibition is Devecser, which lies on the western edge of the Bakony, beside the Torna stream. Archaeological finds indicate that this area was inhabited even in prehistoric times. Devecser has been known since the Árpád era, and most likely got its name from the Devecseri family. The noble family played a major role in the life of Veszprém county, building huge estates, castles, and mansions; it was at this time that the foundation of today’s Esterházy Castle’s predecessor was laid. During the Turkish invasions, Devecser successfully resisted and defended its castles and mansions. After the Turkish wars, lively commercial activity developed in the village, and Devecser soon became the commercial center of the region. The formation of the modern town lasted from the Compromise (1867) until the turn of the 19th century. From the 1970s, the development of Devecser seemed to slow down, as Ajka took over its central role. Devecser was granted town status in 1997. The life of the young town was radically changed by the red mud disaster in 2010. The revived settlement presents this fateful event with an exhibition.

Walking through the city streets, we can follow the architectural memories of the Baroque and Romantic eras, visit the Baroque parish church to listen to the organ play, and admire the wonderful St. Anthony altarpiece. Behind the church, the Baroque rectory house can be found, built at the same time as the church in the mid-18th century. Next to it stands the school building built in Romantic style in 1881. The village school has been here since the late 18th century. The famous historical novel writer Géza Gárdonyi, author of “Eclipse of the Crescent Moon”, taught in the current building between 1882 and 1884.

The pride of Devecser’s main square is the Esterházy Castle, protected as a historic monument. The building reflects the stylistic features of Baroque and eclectic architecture.

As already mentioned, the first construction at the site of the current castle was carried out by the Devecseri family, who converted the old manor house into a castle fortress. This fortress fell into the hands of the Esterházys in the early 1630s, its last owner being Count Tamás Esterházy. During the years of renovation, the old atmosphere of the castle fortress was successfully restored, with coffered ceilings, Renaissance and Baroque fireplaces, oak doors and windows, and carved staircase railings all visible in their original forms.

The English-park style castle garden surrounding the castle was planted with special trees from 1790 by Ferenc Esterházy. A significant part of the trees are native species, and the large specimens surviving from the original plantings are particularly valuable, including sycamores, pedunculate oaks, field maples, and white poplars. Unfortunately, the red mud disaster in October 2010 affected the entire castle park, causing significant damage to the historic garden—the main paths representing the former English park style disappeared, the trees were damaged, died, and were cut down. The park, with its valuable plant collection, centuries-old trees, and microclimate, attracted many visitors especially during the summer, and was one of the most defining venues of the settlement’s life. In 2013, the complete reconstruction of the castle park could begin. The development included landscaping, water management, planting trees, creating walking paths, an ornithological nature trail, and demonstration areas.

This year too, the Sárosfői Hunting Lodge welcomes exhibitors and visiting guests!

All interested parties, guests, and exhibitors with their dogs are warmly invited by the organizers to the Shepherd and Herding Dogs CAC exhibition on August 17th!
