Bakonyerdő Zrt. and the Association of Dog Breeders of Eastern Hungary announce the Shepherd and Herding Dog CAC Exhibition on August 18, 2018. The exhibition venue is Bakonyerdő Zrt.’s Sárosfő Hunting Lodge in Devecser.
All dogs that have ever performed work related to herding or guarding animals are eligible for the Shepherd and Herding Dogs CAC exhibition.
The organization of the exhibition has already become a tradition in the life of the city of Devecser. The first exhibition of this kind was held in 1999, when far fewer breeds were eligible for entry than nowadays. Today, nearly 40 excellent specimens of breeds parade at this exhibition. In the early 2000s, this prestigious event was not held for 6 years, then it was organized again in 2009. Every year, more and more exhibitors arrive with their dogs to the specialized exhibition, and thanks to the colorful and varied programs, the audience also grows every year.
After the red sludge disaster, this year the exhibition is being held for the eighth time, whose main patron has been Dr. István Simicskó for 8 years, whose words we now quote:
“The fact that such an exhibition primarily of Hungarian dog breeds, of herding dogs, is regularly held here with the aim of creating a tradition is something I support, because already in 2003, at my suggestion, the Parliament declared indigenous and old Hungarian animal breeds a national treasure, which made Hungarian dog breeds national treasures as well. Since then, the Hungarikum law was also passed and the 9 national dog breeds have also been included in the national value register.
We are on the path of continuing recognition and preservation work, and obviously, such an exhibition, this beautiful environment and venue further encourage people to come here and create a nice, family-like atmosphere. Dog lovers, the locals, and others also gladly come here, and I am happy to meet them here, because the environment is truly ideal, the host is very good, the forestry service is excellent, the community of Hungarian dog enthusiasts is very good, so I trust that this also supports domestic dog breeding and is always a unique value for the locals when they can come here and enjoy a colorful program.
What humanity and the dog’s relationship has experienced is incredible. Because the dog has accompanied humanity throughout its history, in any form, even in wars as fighting dogs, military dogs saving many lives, as hunting dogs, guard dogs, herding dogs; numerous breeds have developed thanks to human breeding that ease human life and positively transform human lifestyle. Whoever takes a dog has a responsibility towards it, they must train, care for, and nurture it, and this is a relatively long-term process. I think this is a useful thing because it teaches our children responsibility. If we as parents explain this to them skillfully and present it properly, I believe it can guide the child’s development in the right direction. I would like to see that those children who now accompanied their parents here will continue these dogs, obviously not these exact ones, but their descendants, and carry on this beautiful tradition, preserving our values and nurturing our traditions.”
Dr. István Simicskó’s thoughts are continued by Ilona Udvardiné Lukács, one of the main organizers of the exhibition, with the following reflections:
“It is definitely good to start dog keeping at the right time, even in childhood with a puppy, because the sense of responsibility develops in children who keep dogs, and later in adulthood it certainly benefits to have had a dog, to have a dog, or to have one, I am sure, because those who have a dog when young are infected for life.”
With these kind words, the organizers warmly invite exhibitors with their dogs and lovers and admirers of these breeds, as well as visiting guests, to the Sárosfő Hunting Lodge this year again for a joint dog event and a beautiful day spent together!

Introducing the city of the dog show, Devecser
The city of the Shepherd and Herding Dog CAC show is Devecser, which is located at the western edge of the Bakony, beside the Torna creek. Archaeological finds indicate that this area was already inhabited in prehistoric times. Devecser has been known since the Árpád era, and its name probably comes from the Devecseri family. The noble family played a major role in the life of Veszprém County, building huge estates, castles, and mansions; they also laid the foundations of the predecessor of today’s Esterházy Castle. During the Turkish invasions, Devecser successfully resisted and defended its castles and mansions. After the Turkish wars, a lively commercial life developed in the village, and Devecser soon became the commercial center of the area. The formation of the present city took place from the Compromise until the turn of the 19th century. From the 1970s on, Devecser’s growth seemed to slow down, as Ajka took over its central role. Devecser was granted city status in 1997. The life of the young city was radically changed by the red sludge disaster that occurred in 2010. The revived settlement presents this turning point event through an exhibition.
Walking through the streets of the town, we can trace the architectural memories of baroque and romanticism, visit the baroque parish church to listen to the organ music and view the magnificent Saint Anthony altarpiece. Behind the church, we find the baroque parish house, which was built at the same time as the church, in the mid-18th century. Next to it stands the school building built in a romantic style in 1881. Since the end of the 18th century, the village school was located here. Between 1882 and 1884, Géza Gárdonyi, the author of the historical novel "Stars of Eger," taught in the current building.
The pride of Devecser's main square is the Esterházy Castle, which is under monument protection. The building reflects the stylistic features of baroque and eclectic architecture.
As mentioned earlier, the first construction on the site of the current castle was commissioned by the Devecseri family, who had a castle built from the old manor house. This fortress came into the hands of the Esterházys in the early 1630s, with the last owner being Count Tamás Esterházy. After years of renovations, the old atmosphere of the castle was successfully restored; the coffered ceilings, Renaissance and baroque fireplaces, oak doors and windows, and the carved stair railing are visible in their original form.
The English garden-style castle park surrounding the castle features special trees planted from 1790 by Ferenc Esterházy. A significant portion of the trees are native, and the large specimens remaining from the original plantings are particularly valuable, including mapled-leaf sycamores, pedunculate oaks, field maples, and white poplars. Unfortunately, the red mud disaster in October 2010 affected the entire castle park, significantly damaging the historic garden; the main paths representing the former English park style disappeared, the trees were damaged, died, and were cut down. The park, with its valuable plant collection, centuries-old trees, and microclimate, attracted many visitors especially during the summer period, and was one of the most defining places in the life of the settlement. The complete reconstruction of the castle park could begin in 2013. During the development, beyond landscaping and water management, plants were planted, walking paths created, and an ornithological nature trail and exhibition areas were established.
