Bakonyerdő Zrt. and the Eastern Hungarian Dog Breeders Association announce a Shepherd and Herding Dog CAC exhibition on August 19, 2017 and organize a & PUPPY SHOW for all baby and puppy aged dogs (between 3 – 9 months). The venue of the exhibitions is Bakonyerdő Zrt. Sárosfői Hunting Lodge in Devecser.
Any dog that has ever performed work related to herding or guarding animals can enter the Shepherd and Herding Dogs CAC exhibition.
The organization of the exhibition is already considered a tradition in the life of the city of Devecser. The first exhibition of this kind was held in 1999, when far fewer breeds were eligible to enter compared to today. Today, nearly 40 excellent specimens of breeds can parade at this exhibition. In the early 2000s, this prestigious event was not held for 6 years, but then it was held again in 2009. Every year, more and more exhibitors arrive with their dogs to this special exhibition, and thanks to the colorful and varied programs, the number of visitors also increases each year.
After the red sludge disaster, this year the exhibition is held for the VIIth time, with Dr. István Simicskó serving as the main patron for the 7th year, whose words we recall now:
“The fact that such an exhibition primarily featuring Hungarian dog breeds, shepherd dogs, is held here regularly, with the aim of establishing a tradition, is a matter I support because, back in 2003, on my suggestion, the National Assembly declared indigenous and ancient Hungarian animal breeds to be national treasures, including Hungarian dog breeds. Since then, the Hungarikum law has been passed, and nine national dog breeds have been registered in the national value repository.”
We are on the path of continuing value-recognition and value-preservation work, and naturally, such exhibitions, this beautiful environment and venue further encourage people to come here and create a nice family atmosphere. Dog lovers, locals, and others gladly come here, and I gladly meet them here because the setting is really ideal, the host is very good, the forestry department is excellent, and the Hungarian dog community is great, so I trust that this also helps domestic dog breeding and is always a unique value for the local people when they can come here and enjoy a colorful program.”
It is incredible what humanity and dogs have experienced together. Dogs have accompanied human history in many forms: as war dogs, military dogs saving many lives, hunting dogs, guard dogs, herding dogs. Numerous dog breeds developed through human breeding that ease human life and positively change human lifestyle. Whoever adopts a dog has responsibility for it, must train, care for, and look after it, which is a relatively long-term process. I believe this is useful because it teaches responsibility to our children. If we, as parents, explain and demonstrate this properly to them, I think it can steer the development of the child in the right direction.”
Dr. István Simicskó’s thoughts are continued by Ilona Udvardiné Lukács, one of the main organizers of the exhibition, with the following thoughts:
“It is certainly good to start with dogs at the right time, even in childhood with a puppy, because responsibility develops in those children who keep dogs and later, as adults, it definitely benefits them that they had, have, or will have a dog. I am sure of this because those who had a dog in their childhood are infected for life.”
Starting with these nice words, the organizers warmly welcome exhibitors with their dogs and lovers and fans of these breeds, as well as visiting guests, to the Sárosfői Hunting Lodge for a day of communal dog activities and a beautiful day spent together!

The video recording made by Devecser Television about the 2014 Shepherd and Herding Dog CAC dog show can be viewed here:
The city hosting the Shepherd and Herding Dog CAC exhibition is Devecser, located on the western edge of the Bakony hills, beside the Torna creek. Archaeological findings indicate that this area was inhabited even in prehistoric times. Devecser is a known settlement since the Árpád era, likely named after the Devecseri family. The noble family played a major role in the life of Veszprém county, building vast estates, castles, and mansions; during this time, they laid the foundations of what is now the Esterházy castle. During the Turkish devastations, Devecser successfully resisted and defended its castles and mansions. After the Turkish wars, a lively commercial life developed in the village, and Devecser soon became the commercial center of the region. The formation of the present city took place from the Compromise until the turn of the 19th century. From the 1970s, Devecser’s development seems to slow, as Ajka takes over its central role. Devecser was granted city status in 1997. The young city's life was radically changed by the red sludge disaster in 2010. The revived settlement showcases this turning event with an exhibition.
Walking along the streets of the city, we can follow the architectural memories of Baroque and Romantic styles, visit the baroque parish church to listen to the organ music and see the miraculous altarpiece of Saint Anthony. Behind the church stands the baroque parsonage house, built around the same time as the church, in the mid-18th century. Next to it is the school building constructed in a romantic style in 1881. The village school has been in this place since the end of the 18th century. The current building hosted teaching between 1882 and 1884 by Géza Gárdonyi, the author of the historical novel “Eclipse of the Crescent Moon” (“Egri Csillagok”).
The pride of Devecser’s main square is the Esterházy castle, protected as a historic monument. The building reflects the features of Baroque and eclectic architecture.
As already mentioned, the first construction at the current castle site was commissioned by the Devecser family, who had a castle built from the old manor house. This stronghold fell into the hands of the Esterházy family in the early 1630s, its last owner being Count Tamás Esterházy. During the years-long renovations, the old atmosphere of the castle was successfully restored; the coffered ceilings, Renaissance and Baroque fireplaces, oak doors and windows, and the carved stair railings can be seen in their original forms.
The English garden-style castle park surrounding the castle was planted with special trees from 1790 by Ferenc Esterházy. A significant portion of these trees are native; the large specimens remaining from the original plantings are particularly valuable, including maple-leaved plane trees, pedunculate oaks, field maples, and white poplars. Unfortunately, the red sludge disaster that occurred in October 2010 affected the entire castle park, significantly damaging the historic garden; the main paths representing the former English park style disappeared, the trees were damaged, died, and were cut down. The park, with its valuable plant stock, centuries-old trees, and microclimate, attracted many visitors especially during the summer; furthermore, it was one of the most defining scenes of the town’s life. In 2013, the complete reconstruction of the castle park could begin. During the development, besides landscaping and water management, plants were planted, walking paths created, an ornithological nature trail and exhibition areas were established.
This year the Sárosfő Hunting Lodge will welcome the exhibitors and visiting guests!
All interested parties, guests, and exhibitors, along with their dogs, are warmly invited by the organizers on August 19th to the Shepherd and Herding Dogs CAC & PUPPY SHOW events!
