Introducing the dog show city, Jászberény
The city hosting the Guardian-Protector CAC dog show is Jászberény, located in the heart of the Great Plain on both banks of the Zagyva River. Jászberény, known as the "capital of Jászság," is the second most populous city in the county.
According to archaeological evidence, the area was inhabited as early as prehistoric times; Celts and later Avars settled in this region. The settlement was specifically established during the reign of the Árpád dynasty, but was completely destroyed by the Mongol invasion.
The Jász people populated this region in the 13th century. Since that time, Jászberény became the intellectual, economic, and religious center of Jászság. During the Turkish era, the city belonged to the Sultan’s private treasury, and a palisade castle was built for its defense, which was unfortunately destroyed by fire and was never rebuilt. The city also took part in the 1848-49 freedom fight; the Lehel Hussar regiment was formed in Jászberény from volunteers recruited in Jászság. After the 1950s, the city started to develop more rapidly, with the establishment of the first large industrial plants providing more job opportunities for the population.
Among the sights of Jászberény, we must first mention the Jász Museum, which has been operating since 1931 and presents written and material relics of the Jász people's past through its permanent exhibitions. The most valuable piece in the collection exhibited in the historic building is a richly carved ivory horn, Lehel's horn, which according to legend was owned by Lehel, a Hungarian hero who campaigned in Germany at the end of the 10th century. The Hamza Museum and the Jász Gallery represent the painterly work of Ákos Hamza D., a painter-director, and the museum also houses Ákos Hamza D.'s library of 600 volumes.
Further historical sights in the city include the Gothic-origin and Baroque-styled Church of Our Lady of the Hungarians, the Franciscan Church built in the 15th century, and the Ascension of Jesus Roman Catholic Church.
Jászberény has a lively cultural life thanks to its recurring annual events, such as the International Dance House and Music Camp, the Csángó Festival, the National Honey Fair, and the Jászberényi Summer. The city is home to the internationally renowned Jászság Folk Dance Ensemble, the Lehel Ballroom Dance Club, the Palotásy János Mixed Choir, and the Székely Mihály Choir as well.
For families, the Animal and Botanical Garden operating since 1979 can be a real recreation, which, with its 4.5 hectare area, is one of the smallest zoos in Hungary. The zoo showed almost a constant image for nearly two decades, but from the mid-1990s, significant changes began; the narrow closed cages were replaced by spacious enclosures and further nature-close innovations were introduced.
The zoo’s aim is to keep and present the animals under the best possible conditions, therefore the enclosures are spacious and enriched with environmental elements to imitate natural habitats. Like other Hungarian zoos, their main task is considered to be education and nature conservation training.
The zoo welcomes guests daily with zoo-educational feeding demonstrations. During the programs started in 2001, the animals receive their daily food, for which they often have to work, while visitors can hear a lot of information about the animals.
In 2003, the zoo began to expand towards the arboretum, literally taking visitors into the forest, where within the 2-hectare arboretum there are three nature trails, which visitors can walk to learn many important things, for example, about bird and forest protection. The Bird Protection Trail presents over 90 animal species with colorful pictures on 41 stations and 50 information boards, as well as 66 bird protection tools and methods. The purpose of the trail’s creation was to also draw visitors’ attention to the arboretum next to the Jászberény zoo and thereby to environmental education.
Come and visit, the Association warmly welcomes you!
Everyone interested, guests, and exhibitors with their dogs are warmly welcomed by MEJÁSZ to the special spring season dog show in Jászberény!
